What is a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan?
A loan for learners aged 19 and over studying in Further Education at Level 3 or above. The loan is provided by the Student Loans Company (SLC) and paid directly to the College. The loan is NOT means tested or dependent on credit checks. The loan application covers the duration of the course. You will not need to reapply each year.
Am I eligible for a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan?
To be eligible students must be:
- a UK resident
- studying a level 3 or 4 qualification
- aged 19 or above

Can I receive a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan for my course?
Your course needs to be at Level 3 or above. These include:
- BTEC Extended Diploma
- Access to Higher Education course
What does the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan cover?
The loan covers core tuition fees only. You will need to fund:
- Living costs whilst you are studying
- Travel and childcare. You will be able to apply to the Loans Bursary Fund for help towards these costs.
How do I apply for a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan?
You will need a course offer from the college, proof of identification and your learning references numbers. Once you have been offered a place on a course and accepted your offer, an information funding letter will be sent out to you with all the information you need to apply. Applications can be submitted now, and are made online directly to the Student Loans Company.
When do I need to repay the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan?
In the April following the completion of your course and when you are earning at least £21,000 a year. Repayments will be 9% of your salary, regardless of how much you owe. Interest on the loan is low, and is charged at RPI – RPI 3%, depending on how much you earn. If you do not earn £21,000 a year you will not have to repay your loan. After 30 years, the loan will be written off.
Can I still get college funding towards travel and childcare?
Yes. The Loans Bursary Fund will be available to eligible full-time learners receiving the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan. Please note unlike the loan the Loans Bursary Fund will be means tested. You will be eligible if your household income is £30,000 or under.
Good news for Access students
Access students who take out this loan and then go on to complete a Higher Education course will have the debt of the 19+ loan cleared. These students will only need to pay the HE loan back once they are earning £21,000 or over.
