The Bath City Academy has been running since 2009 and Bath College has provided the educational element of the programme since 2014. In this time students have engaged in sport programmes at different levels.

As part of the programme students attend Bath College to study in the mornings and train in the afternoons. Training takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays with matches taking place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In total the Academy players will train or play for 10–12 hours each week.

The Bath City Football Academy competes in three leagues, the ECFA Category 1 and the British Colleges League Category 2 on Wednesdays and in the South West Counties Youth League on Saturdays. Saturday home fixtures take place at the home of the football club, Twerton Park.

All three of these leagues are extremely competitive and focus heavily on player development.

Training sessions are based on a playing philosophy formed around encouraging players to be able to make decisions independently and within a team structure. Players will learn their roles and responsibilities within a team framework within several playing formations. Individuals will learn how to keep possession of the football, when to play forward, when to risk possession, how to defend and team strategies of where to defend. Performance and results are judged in equal measure in terms of importance.

The aim of the programme is to support the development of all students. Some students will have the opportunity to train with the Bath City first team squad and some may, as has happened in previous seasons, play for the first team. After two or three years of study, students will have earned appropriate levels of qualifications that will give them the options to progress into a range of career opportunities. In the seven years since its inception, the Academy has seen students:

  • Go on to study at the University of Bath on the Performance Programme
  • Play for Bath City under 21’s
  • Play for the Bath City first team
  • Represent the England Colleges FA national team
  • Represent Somerset FA and schools
  • Take up scholarship opportunities in USA
  • Play local football at various levels
  • Become coaches, full-time and part-time

The Bath City Football Academy study programme is an excellent programme that is designed to offer young adults the opportunity to gain an academic qualification and develop as a footballer under the guidance of UEFA A licence qualified coach and former professional footballer Billy Clark.
