Event Overview

During February half-term (17th-19th) we will be hosting an event where you can experience what it’s like to be a Bath College student for the day. This is an opportunity to get hands-on experience with a course that you’re interested in, help decide between two different courses, or even whether College is right for you. On each day, we will be hosting a different experience day covering different departments. You can register for as many days as you would like and pick up to two workshops to attend per day (see possible combinations below).

Daily Schedule

Each day will run from 09:00 – 13:00 and will provide you with the opportunity to take part in pre-apprenticeship workshops, learn about the courses and meet your potential tutors.

Bath College launches new state-of-the-art SEND Centre

 

Bath College has opened a new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Centre, Wellow House, which houses a whole range of state-of-the-art facilities which include a sensory room, a de-escalation calming room, an accessible kitchen and a fully operational one-bedroomed flat.
 

Wellow house is at Bath College’s Somer Valley Campus in Radstock and has had a £300,000 investment from B&NES Council.
 

The new facility has allowed the College to welcome a cohort of pre-entry level learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). These learners follow a curriculum designed around Pathways for Adulthood and making good choices for their lives. This new programme is an addition to the College’s successful Life and Independent Living Skills (LILS) programme, designed for 16-25-year-old learners with SEND.
 

LILS students with Inclusion Staff and Glastonbury Festival StewardsWellow House has attracted attention in Somerset, with the Glastonbury Festival stewards raising £740, which was used to purchase items for the sensory room such as bean bags and weighted blankets.
 

There are exciting plans for the future of the centre, which include a café, market garden and on-site residence.
 

The launch was also the LILS and Pre-entry students’ annual Christmas fair, for which they prepared hampers, cakes and soup, a raffle, homemade chutneys, gifts and games for the visitors of the facility to purchase. The learners will spend the proceeds on a small reward for themselves for their hard work, donating the rest to CLIC Sargent, a charity that has helped many of them through cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Carole Stott, Chair of Governors at Bath College, officially opened the SEND Centre with a ceremonial ribbon after the students welcomed guests by signing and singing Christmas songs. She said: “We are delighted to launch Wellow House.
 

Students manning hamper stall“This initiative is part of the ‘Local First’ policy, where young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are educated in their local community rather than being sent ‘out of county’.”
 

Chris Wilford, Head of Education Inclusion Service at B&NES Council added: “It’s been an absolute pleasure for us at the local authority to work in partnership with Bath College to bring a much-needed facility to young people in B&NES and the surrounding area.”

Agricultural Mechanics students return to College after 50 years

 

Nine ex-students of Norton Radstock College returned to what is now the Somer Valley Campus of Bath College to have a 50-year reunion.

 

They studied Agricultural Mechanics from 1967-69 and decided to meet up to catch up with each other, share memories and see if the course itself led to the paths they took with their careers.
 

The alumni had a tour of Somer Valley Campus in Radstock, where they spoke to lecturers from a range of disciplines including carpentry & joinery, bricklaying, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, animal care, stonemasonry, engineering and motor vehicle.
 

Stuart King, Head of English & Maths at Bath College, led the tour and gave the group a brief overview of how College has changed since they left. He said: “it’s been fantastic having the alumni with us. Hearing their stories of 50 years ago and how successful they have gone on to be is really heart-warming.”
 

The ex-students very much enjoyed their tour of the College before heading off to a reunion lunch at a local pub.
 

Steve Crowe said: “Years ago when we studied here it was far more based on mechanical and hand-skills. Now I get the impression it’s much more diverse focusing on many different skills. I’ve been so impressed, especially with the stonemasonry workshop which is a real unique selling point.”
 

Mike Church said: “Coming back to the College has shown an incredible change. Like everything, including all the people here today, everything has moved on. I have been very impressed seeing the broad curriculum that is taught here, it has really opened my eyes.”
 

Nick Dee Shapland, who organised the reunion added: “We couldn’t have asked for more this morning, what an enterprising college! Each lecturer has really given us an insight.”

Bath College secures funding for women’s futsal team

 

Bath College is delighted to have been selected as one of thirty colleges to receive English Colleges FA Growth Funding to support the formation of a new women’s futsal team.
 

The college was chosen out of 100 applicants to receive the funding which will help establish a sustainable futsal team over the next 3 years, allowing new and existing students to participate and therefore creating a more inclusive extra-curricular offer.
 

The money will help provide qualified and licensed coaches, referees and kit to help the futsal team improve their skills and abilities, and give them a positive and enjoyable experience of futsal whilst studying at college.
 

Bath College is extremely passionate about ensuring their students are able to join a sporting community to keep them physically active and positively impact their mental wellbeing.
 

Shaun Mullen, who will be head of futsal provision, is a UEFA B licence futsal coach and FA Tutor.
 

Shaun reflected on how the funding would help the college by saying that this would: “Increase the participation rates among not just sports students but also the wider student community of the college. This will give students an opportunity in potentially a new sport to learn core values and skills and create a new social group within a team environment.”

Case Study: Jessica’s Erasmus Catering placement in Seville

 
We spoke to Jessica Porch about her REYeurope Erasmus+ placement in Seville.

 

Name: Jessica Porch
Course Name: Catering and Hospitality Level 3
Placement Location: Seville
 
Why did you apply for the placement?
I applied for my placement because I was interested in working abroad.
I was encouraged by my tutors and lectures at college to go as it would be and was a good experience.
I prepared myself by writing a CV and cover letter and also organised my passport, EHIC card, travel money card and budget.
 
Describe your work placement and tasks.
My work placement was joined onto an English Hotel so served English food as well and Spanish tapas food. Some tasks that I carried out were preparing starter dishes, preparing all food that needed to be cooked in advanced and also cleaning down the kitchen after service.
 
What was your biggest learning experience and achievement during your placement?
Learning about different cuisine and learning a new language.
 
Do you feel that your international placement will help you professionally in the future and if so, how?
I think that it will help me in the future as it shows that I have no limit to what I think I can achieve.

What did you like best about your destination abroad and why?
The city was really beautiful and had lots of amazing attractions that we visited throughout the 3 weeks. I also liked the restaurants and shops we went in and the people were very welcoming. It was also really hot which is always nice when you are not used to it.
 
What next for you and do you have any advice for future participants?
Next for me is going into a full time job away from home. And my advice would be don’t get too caught up in missing parents or loved ones as the time goes so fast that you have to enjoy all of your time there and use your days off wisely – go sight seeing or to the beach.

Congratulations to Bath College Higher Education Graduates

 

Higher Education graduates from Bath College celebrated their success at their Graduation Ceremony on Thursday.
 
More than 60 students dressed in mortar boards and gowns gathered at The Assembly Rooms to collect their certificates.
 
The students have all completed degree level and higher education courses, including programmes validated by the University of Bath and The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) among others.
 
The ceremony opened with an impressive Civic Procession made up of the Senior Management Team of the College, Heads of Departments, academic staff, Governors, and The Mayor of Bath, Councillor Gerry Curran, led by the City Sword-Bearer and two Mace-Bearers.
 
Once everyone was seated, guests were welcomed by Laurel Penrose, Principal and CEO of Bath College, and certificates were handed out to graduates from Carole Stott, the Chair of Governors.
 

Keynote speaker, Professor Sue Rigby, Vice Chancellor of Bath Spa University, inspired the crowds with her words: “Reading through the graduation programme I realised your degrees are an exact list of the skills that are needed in this region.
 
“We [Bath Spa University] really value the relationship we have with the college. You are a fantastic college. You are an asset to your city.”
 
After the Ceremony the graduates gathered outside the Assembly Rooms and threw their hats in the air to the cheers of guests and passers-by.
 
A drinks and canapé reception was held at Woods restaurant where the graduates and their families continued their celebration.
 
Laurel Penrose, Principal and CEO of Bath College said that: “It has been a wonderful day.
 
“Behind each graduate, I’m sure, is a dream. One that is full of hope and one that is borne of ambition, aspiration.
 
“Our students remind us that success comes to those who work – and I know the extra work they have undertaken through their studies will, at times, have been difficult and gruelling, but they have made it through and we are incredibly proud.”

Travelling along the Silk Road at the Spiciest Shrubbery Event yet

 

Last week our Shrubbery Restaurant hosted its spiciest event yet, with the Silk Road Spice Night. The dishes were inspired by places such as Pakistan, India and Shanghai, with each one have an element or interpretation of spice.

 

The dishes included Tuna Tataki, Poached Seabass, Spicy Pork Soup, Chocolate Tart and many more. Each one being designed and executed by Catering students in the kitchen, and served by Hospitality students in the restaurant. The food itself was presented akin to a professional kitchen and tasted incredible, there were very few unfinished plates left in the dining room.

 

The Shrubbery is a great way for students to get real job experience from within the College. Every aspect of the Restaurant and Kitchen is run by the students, including making bookings, running the bar, table service, preparation, clearing up, cooking and decoration. The students in the kitchen create their own menus for certain themes and have freedom in their creativity, they are then responsible for executing their dishes to order on the night of service, and they do a fantastic job every time.

Apprentice of the Month: March 2019

 

 

 

Our March Apprentice of the Month is Callum Cocks. Callum is a Level 2 NVQ Stonemason working for Well’s Cathedral and has been nominated by his tutor Ash.

 

The Stonemasonry Apprenticeship provides a practical hands on experience of stonemasonry. You’ll learn to prepare for the job as well as produce architectural stone work. An apprenticeship offers you a broad opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills to become a qualified Stonemason, through instruction in the classroom and practical work experience on the job.

 

Callum’s tutor Ash told us:

“Callum is a model student and works to a very high standard as a stonemason and sometimes even matches the level 3 learners for skill.  He is methodical and is always challenging himself to become better, both at college and at work. Callum works very well within the classroom and is a popular figure, he is likely to finish his apprenticeship early and also complete his Diploma well within the deadlines given. He is also supporting other colleagues in the same class where required and helping with knowledge and tips on gathering evidence for the apprenticeship.  Callum has helped on open days for the college and promoting stonemasonry for department, he is engaging and passionate about his job and loves working with stone.”

 

Callum is well deserving of this month’s title of Apprentice of the Month, good luck with the rest of your studies Callum!

Bath College’s Top Three Apprenticeships of the Month

 

March Edition

 

#1
Trainee Electrical Engineer

This exciting Apprenticeship is with Facade Hoists Ltd, the UK’s leading manufacturer of suspended access equipment (window cleaning cranes). The systems for these hoists are electrically controlled and as an apprentice you would be learning how to prepare control panels for the machines, running electrical cables onto the system, wiring control systems and motors as well as testing and fault finding. Alongside this practical, hands on experience you would complete a Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification, which should take around 36 months. Facade are looking for an adaptive team worker with a desire and willingness to learn. Ideally you would have a years’ worth of electrical experience under your belt, and 5 GCSE’s graded A-c including English and Maths. This is an ideal opportunity for an electrician to expand their skillset and get a brand new set of skills. Business and Skills Apprentice

This interesting Apprenticeship is in Bath and North East Somerset Council, helping to deliver their strategies and projects. BaNES have ambitious plans for the future, and are aiming to create over 10,000 jobs by 2036 to make their local economy more competitive and encourage residents to enter employment and progress their careers. This Apprenticeship is based in the Business and Skills team, who are responsible for the promotion, co-ordination and direction of economic development within Bath and North East Somerset. As an apprentice you’ll have a range of responsibilities, giving you lots of valuable experience. You will be tasked with updating the ‘invest in Bath’ pages on the council website; marketing and promoting business news and events; maintaining the CRM systems, performing regular data cleanses; general day to day administration and support; ensuring business enquiries are sent to the relevant person or department and also ensuring these have been fulfilled by your colleagues in a timely manner. Alongside your apprenticeship you will complete an administration or customer service qualification. During the first year of your employment you will be paid a wage of £12,113.85 per year, which will then increase depending on your age. Apprentice Care and Support Worker

This Apprenticeship allows you to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable people in the community. You’ll be training as a Care and Support worker for Safe & Sound Homecare, in a varied and fulfilling role. Your regular activities will include, domiciliary care, personal care, domestic services, shopping, taking people to appointments, medication management and social outings. The work is done in shifts, with regular weekday shifts being 7am to 2pm and 4pm to 10pm. Weekend hours are varied, but you get paid extra for working weekends and bank holidays. Aside from being paid more for weekends and bank holidays, there are a host of other benefits that Safe & Sound Homecare offer you as an employee, these include; paid mileage and travel time, 28 days’ holiday (pro rata) and a Christmas Bonus after two years’ continuous employment. Alongside your working days you’ll study a Level 2 Diploma in Care. The experience and qualification combined provide the perfect footing for entry into the care sector, and you could eventually progress onto a team leader/supervisor role and complete a Level 3 in Adult Health and Social care. The apprenticeship is expected to last 18 months, and you will need access to your own transport and at least 4 GCSE’s grades D-E (3-1) or an NVQ Level 1. The wage is £6.15 per hour during the week and £7.15 per hour over the weekends. Gab Hatter: A Bath College Love2Learn Success Story

 

On Thursday 28th February, Bath College hosted a Wedding Fayre allowing local exhibitors to showcase their wedding accessories, services and stationery. Exhibitors from all over Bath and the surrounding areas came down to showcase the amazing things they offered.

 

Alongside many other exhibitors, Gwenda Bryce, founder of Gab Hatter, attended with a large collection of her hand made wedding hats and fascinators. Gwenda has a very unique relationship with Bath College and we caught up with her to ask her about her journey into Millinery.

 

Gwenda told us that she attends the Ascot Horse Races every single year, and she would always dream of making her own hat to take along with her. Originally from Edinburgh, she found a millinery course to attend there and decided to bite the bullet and attend it. However, at the last minute she decided to look locally and saw that Bath College were offering a Love2Learn leisure course in Millinery. She enrolled on to this course and loved it; so much in fact, she decided to continue studying and enrolled onto more Love2Learn leisure courses, doing 18 months of millinery work on an evening course.

 

Gwenda then went on to train at The British School of Millinery and has also had the opportunity to work with top milliners, such as Bridget Bailey, Ani Townsend and Jane Taylor (whose hats have been worn by members of the Royal family, including The Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Eugenie).

 

Gwenda then started her own business and operates out of her home in Bath. She makes bespoke hats to order, and also has a huge collection of unique hats she has created in her free time. Her business is called Gab Hatter, Gab being her initials and also a likeness to the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland.

 

Gwenda absolutely loves what she does and this is apparent when you speak to her. She’s now looking into expanding her skillset into working with leather, and likes to look around her for inspiration for her hats. It’s always fantastic to see our learners achieve great things after their time at College and we couldn’t be more proud that Gwenda is now doing what she loves as a business, what an incredible achievement!

Bath College Business and Accounting students wow local Accounting Experts during Business Challenge

 

Last week 23 Level 3 Business BTEC and Accounting students participated in the annual Business and Accounting challenge. To complete the challenge Students had to look at a business case study and prepare a presentation to suggest the direction this business should take for the future. They had to work in teams to create their plans, thinking about how the business might grow and develop and what obstacles may be in their way. Midway through they were given newspaper articles and memos, which altered the plans of the business and challenged them to rethink and adjust. They had to show the judges they could adapt to different scenarios, just like in the ever changing world of business.

The challenge was run by Jack Henman from the Accountancy body ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) and Donna West, Bath College’s own AAT Co-ordinator.  The judges themselves were all from local accountancy businesses, including MHA Monahans Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, Richardson Swift LTD and Independent Vet Care.  Richardson Swift Ltd were kind enough to sponsor the trophies, which were given out at the end of the day to the team with the best plan. The decision as to who was the winner took a lot of deliberation from the judges, as all the students had done so well! After much discussion they came to an agreement and announced the winning team, which consisted of Bethany, Alexandra and Maddison.

Bath College’s Top Three Apprenticeships of the Month

#1
Apprentice Care and Support Worker

This is an excellent route into the care industry. If you are reliable, caring, compassionate and organised you will be perfect for this role. This apprenticeship is based at Safe and Sound Homecare and is an ideal entry point in to the care industry, and on the apprenticeship you will gain a Level 2 Diploma in Care. Upon completion of the apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to progress within the sector. You will need to be aged 18 or older and hold a full UK driving license with access to your own transport. The salary is generous, at £6.15 per hour on weekdays and £7.15 per hour on weekends. Business Administrator

This exciting Apprenticeship is in Bath’s brand new Casino, Century Casino. The Casino is set across three floors and includes a brand new private Beau Nash Suite which is available for private hire. The Apprenticeship will be working in the administration side providing support and ensuring the smooth running of the admin office. Some of your duties will include; payroll administration, HR administration, invoice processing, liaising with department heads plus many more. This apprenticeship is a great way to gain lots of administration experience including international liaison, as the accounts team is based in Colorado. Alongside your work you will complete an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration. The wage is negotiable, and will not be less than £8 an hour. Junior Accounts Assistant

This last Apprenticeships is an ideal pathway into a career in accounting. The Apprenticeship is with Abel & Imray, a firm of Patent and Trade Mark Attorney’s. The role will be within the accounts team and will see you learn the systems and processes to work within and support the accounts team. Abel and Imray have offices in Bath, London and Cardiff, and this Apprenticeship is based in Bath. Alongside your apprenticeship you will study a qualification at Bath College, this will be a Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting (AAT) and a Level 3 Intermediate Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting (ACCA). This is a great way to get experience and the relevant qualifications to succeed in the Accounting industry. The salary for this Apprenticeship is £250 per week, this is the minimum you will be paid, as depending on your prior or attained experience it will go up. Bath City Football Academy Trials – Registration now open!

 

The Bath City Football Academy trials for 2019 are nearly here and registration is now open! Bath City Football Academy was set up to support the development of all students, both on the pitch as players, and in the classroom. Students will study a BTEC in Sport alongside their training schedule, and after 2-3 years will have the qualifications to progress on to a range of career opportunities. The days involve study at Bath College in the morning’s followed by training in the afternoon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Fixtures are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Successful Academy players have gone on to Bath University to study Sports Performance, gone on to play for Bath City Under 21’s or Bath City first team, take scholarships in the USA and go on to be full and part time coaches.

UCU Industrial Action Statement

 

We have learned that a small number of our staff are taking industrial action on 29th and 30th January. Whilst we are disappointed that some staff are striking, we understand the reasons why. The reality is that Further Education Colleges are inadequately funded by central government and, in fact, we recently took part in the national Love Our Colleges campaign to highlight the lack of central funding and the fact that nationally FE lecturers are not paid well when compared to other education professionals in schools and universities.
 
Our focus is on our students, and I can confirm that the College will remain open throughout the industrial action as we expect the majority of teaching and learning activity to proceed as usual. Staff who are working will ensure that there is minimal disruption to students’ studies and students should continue attending college as normal on the two days of industrial action.
 
We recognise that over the past couple of years we have been through difficult financial times, which has resulted in job losses and no cost of living pay awards. However, we have all worked hard to secure the future of Bath College and prior to the ballot for strike action taking place we had already proposed a 1% pay increase and although we recognise the limitations of the offer we believe that this is the maximum that we can afford whilst still ensuring that the financial wellbeing of the College is secured for all our staff and students.
 
We look forward to continuing to work with the Unions as appropriate.

Top local chefs support Bath College students at Charity Gala Dinner in aid of Dorothy House

 

Bath College announces they are hosting a Charity Gala Dinner in their Shrubbery Restaurant on Thursday 31st January 2019 at 6.30pm in aid of local Hospice, Dorothy House. A four course tasting menu will be served with each course prepared by a different high-profile, local chef with the assistance of the College’s catering students.
 
Bath College are launching the Charity Gala Dinner as part of their annual programme of collaborative fine dining events featuring top, local chefs working alongside staff and students, offering their inspiration and expertise.
 
The line-up of four well-known local chefs will be similar to a round of Professional Masterchef as the chefs will present a brief commentary on the food they have prepared. Each course of the dinner will be created by a different chef including: Chris Cleghorn, Head Chef from The Olive Tree who has worked with Heston Blumenthal, Michael Caines and Adam Simmonds; David Campbell, Head Chef at the 3AA rosette award winning Dower House Restaurant at the Royal Crescent Hotel; Garry Rosser of the award winning fish and chip restaurant, The Scallop Shell, who trained under Mitch Tonks at Fishworks and Damien Wager, a self-taught patisserie chef, who runs his own pastry academy, Edible Art Patisserie
 
This is truly a college-wide event as the dinner will be served front-of-house by students from the Hospitality course and table decorations will be designed and created by the Floristry students and staff. There will also be live music from local guitarist JD and a full bar.
 
Phillippa Watson, Philanthropy Manager at Dorothy House commented: “This Charity Gala Dinner is an exciting new event for Bath to raise funds for vital patient care at the hospice.
 
“We believe this could become an annual ‘hot ticket’ for the Bath calendar bringing together the professional experience of top local chefs and the creative ideas of up and coming Bath College catering students. We’re indebted to the Bath College team for organising this fabulous event.”
 
Damien Wager said that: “I am honoured to be involved in this event and look forward to working alongside not only the best local chefs Bath has to offer, but the culinary students who aspire to be as successful as them one day.”
 
Ryan Hanson, Deputy Head of Hospitality and Catering at Bath College added that: “Students and staff alike are really excited and proud to be working on this event. As caterers these are the occasions that inspire and enthuse teams and for our students it’s a wonderful opportunity to learn and show what they can do.

Catering and Hospitality Employability Week

 

Our Catering and Hospitality students have enjoyed three days of amazing talks, workshops and masterclasses as a part of their employability days. These included a Spice Masterclass, Chocolate Voyage, Cocktail Masterclass, a Hospitality and Customer service talk and workshop, Venison butchery and speed dating interviews with top industries.

 

The purpose of the employability days is to allow students to network with real industry professionals, as well as learn valuable skills that will help them to get and maintain a solid career in their chosen industry.

 

There was a huge selection of classes, talks and workshops on offer, so the students were really spoiled for choice. Tracy Chapman’s Chocolate Voyage went down a storm on the first day as students were able to take part in a chocolate tasting workshop. Tracy is an expert in all things chocolate and a member of the Institute of Chocolate and Cacao tasting London. She talked about the difference between taste and flavour and led the students through an interactive tasting workshop on how to identify flavours, a good skill for any chef transferable across all types of food. Callum Rixson from The Hideout in Bath was also popular, leading students through a cocktail masterclass. He was incredibly passionate about each drink, talking through not only how to make it, but the decisions behind each flavour addition and the choice of alcohol. He also spent time informing the students about each piece of equipment and what they’re used for and how to use them correctly.

 

 

On the second day the students were treated to another collection of amazing opportunities, these included Customer Service talks and Venison Butchery classes from The Pig, Seafood masterclasses led by Sean Wood from the Billingsgate Seafood School and Wine workshops led by Richard Guest from Talking Wines. Steph Young from The Pig led an engaging talk and workshop on Customer Service and hospitality. As Restaurant Manager for The Pig near Bath, hospitality is one of her day to day jobs and she talked at length about her experiences, and what it took to get to where she was in the industry. She also then led a more interactive workshop, giving groups of students a particular type/group of customers and tasking them to think of how to provide the correct type of hospitality and service to suit their client’s needs. The Pig were also on hand again to lead a masterclass on Venison Butchery. They brought up one of their own fresh deer, reared on site, and led students through where each of the cuts originates. Showing students how to prepare the meat for cooking, what to remove and how to remove each cut safely. They talked about what each part of the animal can be used for in order to minimise any waste produced and to get as much from the animal as possible. This was an incredibly useful workshop for any aspiring chefs who want to work with completely fresh meat, and invaluable knowledge for the industry.

 

 

On the final day of their employability workshops our students had workshops and talks from Noya Paladim on Vietnamese food, Chris Cleghorn (Head Chef from The Olive Tree Bath) and Ed Twitchett former student and founder of Round Hill Roastery. There was also a speed dating interview workshop, where students were interviewed by industry professionals from The Bath Pub Company, Royal Crescent Hotel, The Bath Priory and Catering Services International. These interviews not only allowed them to meet industry professionals, but to network and get valuable practice and feedback on their interview skills. This will be invaluable when they leave College and are entering the real world of Catering and Hospitality.

 

 

We hope that the students enjoyed their three days of workshops, masterclasses and talks and we would like to thank all the Industry Professionals for giving up their time to come and in and work with our students.

Westgate IT talks careers to Bath College Computing Students

On Wednesday December 12th December, Nigel Phillips, Director of Westgate IT, and Luke Nix, ex-Bath College student, spoke to Computing Students about careers in computing and opportunities at Westgate IT.

 

Bath College students had an interesting talk from the Director of Westgate IT, Nigel Phillips, who discussed different career options for anyone looking to go into the IT and Computing industry. He also talked at length about the different options available to work with Westgate IT after College.

 

Westgate IT are an IT support company, currently working with over 200 companies. They have offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter and Bath. Over the past 3 years they have taken on 9 Bath College students in Apprentice and Trainee roles, and are currently looking for new trainees. Westgate IT have worked with Bath College in the past, taking on students to work one day a week between May and June to prepare them for an apprenticeship after they leave College. Nigel was keen to offer this opportunity again, which is an incredible opportunity for the students.

 

 

Westgate IT pride themselves on allowing people to grow within the company, and they try to keep all their staff up to date with training. They also offer staff the chance to find their own courses to continue their professional development, and if it will better their skills at work then Westgate IT will pay for it. Nigel also explained how to write a good CV for the computing industry, which provided the students with a good insight into what a top industry expert is looking for in a new employee.

 

Assisting Nigel with the talks was ex-Bath College student Luke Nix, who started off as an Apprentice at Westgate. Luke said that he was initially just interested in getting work experience, however after completing his apprenticeship he realised that he loved working there and was offered a first line contract which he gladly accepted. Luke told us that progressions are incredibly fast in Westgate IT and after a year on a first line contract he now has a review to move onto a second line contract, which is a great promotion in such a short space of time. In Luke’s own words ‘ask and you will get, Westgate will always assist you’.

 

Westgate IT pride themselves on looking after their apprentices, they don’t pay them an apprentice wage, they pay them national minimum wage for their age, and upon completion of your apprenticeship (around 12 months), you are given a pay rise to reflect your status as a contracted member of staff. Your development is then assessed regularly and promotions and pay rises are awarded where necessary.

Bath Colleges Top Three Apprenticeships of the Month

December Edition

 

It’s the last day of our Apprenticeship Takeover and we thought we’d wrap it up with the top three apprenticeship opportunities for this month!

 

Our first one is Cultural and Heritage Venue Operations Apprentice

This is based in Bath at The Roman Baths, Fashion Museum and Assembly rooms, some beautiful places to work! You will be required to work 37 hours a week, this includes your time at College. On Completion of the course you will have a NVQ Level 2 in Creative and Cultural Venue Operations. The salary is £11,406.67 in your first year. Our second one is Level 2 Commis Chef Apprentice

This is a perfect opportunity for an aspiring Chef. You will receive full training and guidance in all aspects of preparing and cooking the freshest ingredients to the highest standards, based in Fuller’s Kitchen establishments across the south of England. You will spend one day a week at Bath College studying, and the rest of your learning with be hands on in the Kitchen. The salary is £246.00 – £328.00 per week, not including any tips you get. Our last top opportunity is a Level 2 Commis Chef Apprenticeship at The Bath Mill

This is another great opportunity for an aspiring Chef and is more local to Bath. You will be providing prompt preparation and food service delivery to a five star standard, learning hands on skills as well as studying at College.
