New Project SEARCH Interns Experience World of Work

 

Ten young people with learning disabilities have started a year-long internship with Bath & North East Somerset Council.
 

It’s the 11th year the council has welcomed interns from Project SEARCH – an initiative led by the council in partnership with Bath College and Virgin Care. The aim of the scheme is to support young adults with learning disabilities into work.
 

Over the next twelve months the interns will work in three placements across the council. The aim is enable the interns to develop skills, gain experience and grow in confidence and independence.
 

Councillor Richard Samuel, cabinet member for Resources, said: “The average employment rate for people with a learning disability in the UK has dropped to just six per cent. We need to address that and increase the opportunities available to young people with learning disabilities. Project SEARCH enables the interns to develop the skills they need to find sustainable employment. Over the years we’ve had huge success with our graduates finding employment through the programme. I’m sure this year’s cohort will benefit enormously from their time with us.”
 

During their time at the council the interns receive on-site tutoring from Bath College and Job Coach support from Virgin Care. The partners also work with local organisations to help interns find vacancies and apply for jobs.
 

Following the successful completion of their internships next June all graduates will be presented with certificates at a special ceremony at the Guildhall.

New Project SEARCH interns start the year with afternoon tea

 

Last week the new Project SEARCH interns gathered in the Guildhall to meet their coursemates for the first time over a cup of tea.
 
Project SEARCH is an employability programme in partnership with Bath and North East Somerset Council and Virgin Care, which helps young adults with learning disabilities gain the skills they need to become employed.
 
The students have a mix of classroom based learning and workplace experience within one of the B&NES departments, with placements varying from working in a kitchen to working in a museum.

Alice Honey (right), who has been through the project SEARCH programme, came to chat to the new interns about what a positive impact the programme can have.
 
She said: “I found Project SEARCH really encouraging. It was good because I learnt the skills to get a job and now I am working 16 hours at Action on Hearing Loss which is great because I live so close. I really enjoy my job, it’s pretty good.”

“Sometimes the course will be hard, so please talk to us, everybody needs some help sometimes. It’s a lovely course, you’ll get some really good employment opportunities and experience.”

Bath College Apprenticeships and Jobs Fair offering opportunities to young people

 
Over 1000 young people will get the opportunity to meet potential apprenticeship providers and employers at Bath College’s annual Apprenticeships and Jobs Fair.

 

The event is taking place at the Assembly Rooms on 27th March between 12pm and 5pm, giving local businesses the chance to showcase their vacancies to local people.
 
This year’s lead sponsors are Bath Building Society, B&NES, Creative Bath and Curo, all who will be found in the Octagon offering apprenticeship opportunities.
 
Many attendees of the 2018 event went onto secure positions at local companies after attending and making the most of networking opportunities.
 
Nick, from a Bath based company, took on an apprentice following last year’s Apprenticeships and Jobs Fair. He said: “Pivoting our recruitment strategy to Apprenticeships has been a revolutionary shift for our company.
 
“There is quite simply no way that we would have grown to the stage that we are without the support of the National Apprenticeship Service, and our Apprenticeship provider.
 
“I could not recommend apprenticeships highly enough as a strategy for recruitment, training and growth.”
 
His apprentice, Oliver, commented: “Having an apprenticeship has allowed me to not only work within my field of interest, but to earn money and develop my professional skills with a well reputed company.
 
“I would highly recommend considering an apprenticeship to anyone looking for post GCSE or A level prospects.”
 
Apprenticeships offer a way to progress quickly in your chosen field, as Ryan Legge, Account Executive at Hayes Parsons found.
 
Ryan completed his A Levels and decided on an apprenticeship rather than going to university: “I was keen to carry on my education but in a working environment, learning on-the-job and being paid, leaving the classroom behind.
 
“The Hayes Parsons Insurance Brokers apprenticeship scheme immediately stood out to me. Not only could I work in an evolving industry with an incredible amount of opportunity, but Hayes Parsons passionately support apprentices in their industry training. Fast-forward almost 6 years; I am now a Chartered Insurance Broker (the highest recognition available, equivalent to a degree) and work within our sales team as an Account Executive.”
 
Ben King, a Bath College student and apprentice at Bath Building Society said: “For me, an apprenticeship is better than going into a job from uni as I’m building my skillset now while I’m at College.
 
“I’m in a business environment, answering phones, working in an office, learning the skills on the job.”
 
Katherine Banks at Bath Building Society explained the importance of apprentices: “We really like to help people to grow. As they’re younger, we can develop their skills and mould them into what’s required.”

Bath College’s Top Three Apprenticeships of the Month

#1
Trainee Electrical Engineer

This exciting Apprenticeship is with Facade Hoists Ltd, the UK’s leading manufacturer of suspended access equipment (window cleaning cranes). The systems for these hoists are electrically controlled and as an apprentice you would be learning how to prepare control panels for the machines, running electrical cables onto the system, wiring control systems and motors as well as testing and fault finding. Alongside this practical, hands on experience you would complete a Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification, which should take around 36 months. Facade are looking for an adaptive team worker with a desire and willingness to learn. Ideally you would have a years’ worth of electrical experience under your belt, and 5 GCSE’s graded A-c including English and Maths. This is an ideal opportunity for an electrician to expand their skillset and get a brand new set of skills. Business and Skills Apprentice

This interesting Apprenticeship is in Bath and North East Somerset Council, helping to deliver their strategies and projects. BaNES have ambitious plans for the future, and are aiming to create over 10,000 jobs by 2036 to make their local economy more competitive and encourage residents to enter employment and progress their careers. This Apprenticeship is based in the Business and Skills team, who are responsible for the promotion, co-ordination and direction of economic development within Bath and North East Somerset. As an apprentice you’ll have a range of responsibilities, giving you lots of valuable experience. You will be tasked with updating the ‘invest in Bath’ pages on the council website; marketing and promoting business news and events; maintaining the CRM systems, performing regular data cleanses; general day to day administration and support; ensuring business enquiries are sent to the relevant person or department and also ensuring these have been fulfilled by your colleagues in a timely manner. Alongside your apprenticeship you will complete an administration or customer service qualification. During the first year of your employment you will be paid a wage of £12,113.85 per year, which will then increase depending on your age. Apprentice Care and Support Worker

This Apprenticeship allows you to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable people in the community. You’ll be training as a Care and Support worker for Safe & Sound Homecare, in a varied and fulfilling role. Your regular activities will include, domiciliary care, personal care, domestic services, shopping, taking people to appointments, medication management and social outings. The work is done in shifts, with regular weekday shifts being 7am to 2pm and 4pm to 10pm. Weekend hours are varied, but you get paid extra for working weekends and bank holidays. Aside from being paid more for weekends and bank holidays, there are a host of other benefits that Safe & Sound Homecare offer you as an employee, these include; paid mileage and travel time, 28 days’ holiday (pro rata) and a Christmas Bonus after two years’ continuous employment. Alongside your working days you’ll study a Level 2 Diploma in Care. The experience and qualification combined provide the perfect footing for entry into the care sector, and you could eventually progress onto a team leader/supervisor role and complete a Level 3 in Adult Health and Social care. The apprenticeship is expected to last 18 months, and you will need access to your own transport and at least 4 GCSE’s grades D-E (3-1) or an NVQ Level 1. The wage is £6.15 per hour during the week and £7.15 per hour over the weekends. The James Dyson Foundation backs B&NES ‘Our Young Stars’ Awards

 

The James Dyson Foundation has been confirmed as a main supporter of Bath and North East Somerset’s Our Young Stars Awards.
 
The awards will recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of extraordinary young people in the district.
 
The James Dyson Foundation, which introduces young people to the exciting world of engineering, is the fifth major supporter to back the awards.
 
Sir James Dyson, founder of The James Dyson Foundation, said: “I am constantly impressed with the ingenuity of young people. My foundation has worked with school children in Bath for many years to encourage their inventive spirit. It is these creative minds who will solve our future world problems. I hope this award will inspire more young people to achieve great things.”
 
In launching the awards at the Guildhall, Bath & North East Somerset Council Leader, Tim Warren said: “I was inspired to create the awards after hearing the remarkable stories of young people, who make a valuable contribution to their community, at Bristol’s Young Heroes Awards, organised by Community of Purpose earlier this year.
 
“I know that across Bath and North East Somerset there are many selfless and courageous young people, who may have forsaken some of the joys and freedom of childhood to make a difference to the lives of others or to achieve great things in the face of adversity or personal challenges.
 
“I think it’s important to recognise these young people, share their stories and celebrate their achievements.
 
“If you know a young person worthy of an ‘Our Young Stars Award’ please make a nomination – we don’t want to miss anyone.”
 
Residents, schools and organisations are now being asked to nominate a young person who they feel is worthy of such an award and receive the recognition they deserve.

B&NES Council welcomes new Bath College interns

This is the 10th year the council has welcomed interns from DFN Project Search – an initiative led by the council in partnership with Bath College and Virgin Care. The aim of the scheme is to support young adults with learning disabilities into work.
 

Councillor Paul Myers, Cabinet member for Economic and Community Regeneration, said: “The average employment rate for young people aged 18-24 with a learning disability in the UK is just seven per cent. We need to do all we can to increase their opportunities and help them develop the skills they need to find sustainable employment. Every year we’ve seen our graduates find community-based employment through the programme and I’m sure this year’s intake will benefit greatly from their time with us.”
 

During their time at the Council the interns receive on-site tutoring from Bath College and Job Coach support from Virgin Care. The partners also work with local organisations to help interns find vacancies and apply for jobs in the community.

Nominations for Chairs Community Awards 2018/19 launched

 

The search is on to find unsung heroes in Bath and North East Somerset with the launch of special awards celebrating volunteers, community leaders, staff and businesses that make a positive contribution to the local community.
 
The Chair of Bath & North East Somerset Community Awards 2018/19 was officially launched on Friday (August 3) at the Guildhall, in Bath, by the Chair, Councillor Karen Walker.
 
Nominations are now open for inspirational people who put others first and contribute to the council’s vision to make Bath and North East Somerset an even better place to live, work and visit.
 
The awards are organised in partnership with B&NES Clinical Commissioning Group, CURO, Sirona Care and Health, B&NES Virgin Care and the Student Community Partnership and Bath College.
 
There are three main categories in the Community Awards: Volunteering, Business and Service to the Community. Service to the Community is a new category and it recognises the exceptional service made by individuals and teams working across the Chair’s Award partner organisations.
 
Bath & North East Somerset Council Chair, Councillor Karen Walker, said: “On a daily basis I meet people who do so much for our community and their work often goes unsung. The Community Awards are an annual celebration to recognising those people, and organisations, who are dedicated and committed to helping others and make our area a better place.
 
“This year we have introduced a new category called Service to the Community which recognises partnership working and staff who share their good work.
 
“I would encourage people to nominate those around them who they think deserve recognition for their hard work and contribution to their communities.”
 
In addition to the awards the Chair may also identify one or more individuals or groups from the nominations received to present a ‘Special Award’.

Here at Bath College we pride ourselves on our sense of community and actively encourage our students to contribute, both on our college campuses and across Bath and North East Somerset.
