Enter a Fantasy World with Bath College Hair and Makeup Students

 

Bath College hosted its annual Hair and Beauty competition and this year it was bigger and better than any other previous year. The running theme this year was a fantasy avant-garde look, and students had complete free reign to come up with their looks, which included Hair, Makeup and Clothing.

 

The students have been preparing for a while, creating mood boards to help inspire their look. They also had to source their own models and complete their look under time constraints. Special judges from within the industry were brought in to assess the students working, as well as their final looks. These included Natalie Yates from Melanie Giles; professional makeup artists, Kellie Moody and Liv Day; Rebecca Catton and Chelsea Gregory from Babington House Cowshed and Abi Greenslade from The Pig Hotel and Spa.

 

 

The hairdressing students had an hour to complete their styles, and the makeup artistry students had two hours, after which they had to stop what they were doing and the judging commenced. The students all worked incredibly hard and the results were incredible. The judges themselves were astounded at the level in which the students were working, and the level of professionalism they showed when at work in the studio. The judges decided on a first, second and third place winner from each group, aside from the Level 1 Festival look, where only a first and second place were awarded. The winners were given fantastic prizes, which were sponsored by Ellisons Hair and Beauty, Bath Academy of Media Makeup, Liv Day MUA, Lucknam Park Spa, Cowshed and The Priory Hotel. Each prize package included an array of beauty tools and products, with one lucky winner getting a £150 voucher for a Special Effects Makeup course at Bath Academy of Media Makeup!

 

Lisa Nelson, Bath College Hospitality, Spa and Landbased lecturer was absolutely thrilled with the work the students put it, stating: “Students were from full time and industry based learning, they were given a free hand to complete a Fantasy Avant Garde total look to include hair make-up and clothing. The Students invested a great deal of time creating these amazing looks, they really let their imaginations run wild. We couldn’t be more proud of the effort made.”

 

At the same time as the Hair and Makeup Challenges, Bath College Spa and Complementary therapy students were taking part in a competition of their own. For the complementary therapy students these included a 45-minute aromatherapy back, neck, shoulder and face massage, with each student blending their own essential oils tailored to their client’s needs; a 45-minute reflexology treatment, using pressure points on the soles of the feet to induce a feeling of relaxation and well-being. The Spa students performed a deep tissue Swedish massage on their clients. Aside from being a competition, this was a great opportunity for students to showcase their talent and skills to local industry professionals, and discuss work opportunities and employment. One student even left the competition day having secured employment in a top establishment! The prizes again were incredible, and included a Spa Day for two at local spas such as Lucknam Park, The Bath Priory and No. 15 Great Pulteney Street.

Success at Chef V Chef 2019

 

On the 15th February our Catering Department and Shrubbery Restaurant once again hosted the annual Chef v Chef Competition. This was an incredible day showcasing not only the talent of local Chefs but also of the Bath College Catering and Hospitality students.

 

To kick off the day students undertook a Canapé and Knife Skills Challenge. Tasked to create a selection of delicious canapés to be served at the awards ceremony at the end of the day. The students made a delicious selection, including a range of perfect Macarons! The winner of the Canapé Challenge was Modesta Petrauskaite, well done Modesta! Knife skills involved students preparing ingredients in different cutting styles, such as julienne and brunoise. They were then marked on how well they had prepared the ingredients and the accuracy of their cutting, the gold award winner of knife skills was Will Evans, closely followed by Fred Veal and Leon Dyer in second and third place respectively.

 

The Level 3 students were tasked with creating a two course meal to serve to guests in ample time. They had to design, cook and serve the meals, all whilst being keenly watched by our judges. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to practice in an environment much like a lunch service in a restaurant, with many high profile guests including the Mayor and Mayoress of Bath. The atmosphere in the kitchen was very tense, but the lunch service was a success and there wasn’t a scrap of food left on any of the plates! This meant the judges had an incredibly difficult decision to make, but ultimately it was Team Connaught who came out on top, consisting of Florence Sewell, Keziah Morgan and Thomas Will.

 

 

The day culminated in the Professional Chef Challenge, which saw Chefs from all over the local area coming down to compete. They needed to prepare a two course signature dish, consisting of a main and a dessert, all whilst being watched by our keen eyed judges. These plates were then tasted by the judges and a display plate was placed in the restaurant for viewing by attendees during the awards ceremony. Once the Chefs were finished they came out and mingled with the audience of the awards, where our Catering and Hospitality front of house students served drinks and the canapés made earlier to guests who were eagerly awaiting the winner’s announcement. After a long period of deliberation, the judges came to a decision, and Jethro Lawrence, Head Chef of Woolley Grange Hotel, was crowned the Professional Chef Champion! The celebration continued on, with more bubbly and canapés making the rounds as winners and runners up chatted about their dishes and collected their awards. What an incredible day! We can’t wait for next year.

Bath College Business and Accounting students wow local Accounting Experts during Business Challenge

 

Last week 23 Level 3 Business BTEC and Accounting students participated in the annual Business and Accounting challenge. To complete the challenge Students had to look at a business case study and prepare a presentation to suggest the direction this business should take for the future. They had to work in teams to create their plans, thinking about how the business might grow and develop and what obstacles may be in their way. Midway through they were given newspaper articles and memos, which altered the plans of the business and challenged them to rethink and adjust. They had to show the judges they could adapt to different scenarios, just like in the ever changing world of business.

The challenge was run by Jack Henman from the Accountancy body ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) and Donna West, Bath College’s own AAT Co-ordinator.  The judges themselves were all from local accountancy businesses, including MHA Monahans Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, Richardson Swift LTD and Independent Vet Care.  Richardson Swift Ltd were kind enough to sponsor the trophies, which were given out at the end of the day to the team with the best plan. The decision as to who was the winner took a lot of deliberation from the judges, as all the students had done so well! After much discussion they came to an agreement and announced the winning team, which consisted of Bethany, Alexandra and Maddison.

ED IS ONE STEP NEARER TO HOLLYWOOD!

Bath College Creative Media Production course leader  is one step nearer to Hollywood as he’s been shortlisted for the international film competition ‘The Pitch’.

 

Ed, pitched his short film idea, ‘Clay’ and has successfully made it through to the finals. Along with nine industry professionals he attended a residential course in the Lake District last week then will go on to pitch his story idea at Pinewood Studios in the New Year.

 

The overall winner will receive a unique opportunity to have their film made with production support and a budget of £30K.  The winner will go to Hollywood, meet Ralph Winter, producer of X-men and Fantastic Four, and host of other industry professionals who will give feedback on the completed film.

 

Ed, a Lecturer in Media Production at Bath College said: “I’ve entered the competition a few times, but never got this far before so I’ve learnt a few things along the way.  In fact this year’s pitch was inspired from last year’s pitch that needed development.  When I reflect I would say there are a few themes I am dealing with such as masculinity, parenting and death.

 

Looking forward to the course Ed said, “If it’s anything like the masterclass we had with Laurie Hutzler at the Watershed last month then it’s going to be hugely beneficial.  As a father of 2 young kids finding time to think through your ideas and concepts is hard work so to have 3 days and exclusive access time to industry professional such as David Baboulene, Jackie Sheppard and Luke is going to be so invaluable.”

 

Luke Walton, the project’s director says:  “2018 has seen a leap in the number, variety and quality of pitches submitted to us for funding, and Ed should feel proud to have reached this stage. This is talent that deserves investment and that is why we offer them development through this residential course. David Baboulene has made extensive study of how story telling works in film and this course will be a prize in and of its self.”
