Celebrating Success Case Study – International Foundation Year Student of the Year

 

Bath College hosts the University of Bath International Foundation Year. This is a one year full time course which prepares International Students for entry into their chosen course at The University of Bath. The IFY course covers the key principles, theories and practical skills which are the standard entry criteria for the University of Bath, and broadly based on the A-level syllabus.

 

Claudia was our International Foundation Year Student of the Year at our 2019 Celebrating Success Awards. Claudia’s citation from her tutor Larissa was absolutely glowing, and we have no doubt that Claudia was the perfect choice to receive this award, Larissa commented

 

“Claudia was a pleasure to work with in and out of the classroom, as she contributed with happiness and enthusiasm to college life. Some students are, unknowingly, a great asset to teachers, as they set a culture of excellence and academic rigour in the classrooms, the laboratory and in student accommodation.”

 

Claudia is now studying Chemical Engineering at Bath University, and we knew we had to ask her about her time on her IFY course!

 

What course did you study at Bath College?

I studied on the International Foundation Year.

 

Why did you choose to study on the International Foundation Year?

I knew I wanted to go to the University of Bath and the foundation year was a path to do so with my USA high school diploma.

 

What was the most interesting thing you did on the International Foundation Year?

The Labs were really interesting and a great way to solidify knowledge from lectures.

 

What is a typical day like as an IFY student?

Starting at around 9:30 am, we had class until lunch then a break then more class until around 5pm. Most of the week would be a mix of classes around these timings, though it was rare to have a day where the only break was for lunch. I had a lot of free time.

 

What are you doing now?

I am now studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath!

 

What are your aspirations for the future?

I would like to become a Chartered Engineer and to work on solving problems we have today such as fossil fuel alternatives and pollution management.

 

What advice would you give to people looking to start the International Foundation Year?

Work hard but also take some time to explore the city. Bath is beautiful and so nice to just take a walk around. Also, you’ll have a head start on all the freshers in your first year at Uni!

 

How do you feel about winning Bath College’s International Foundation Year Student of the Year?

I am so honored and thankful to be chosen for the award. It was such a nice surprise after so much hard work last year!

Case Study: Claire Dean – Highways Distance Learning

 

One of our fabulous Distance Learning students graduated from our Level 4 Professional Diploma in Highways Engineering. Highway Engineering is a distance learning package, similar to the way the Open University operates. No attendance at College is necessary, which makes it perfect for anyone anywhere, and you may enrol at any time and study at your own speed at home or work. We did a short Q&A with Claire to find out why she chose Bath College, and why she chose to study Highways.

 

Can you give us a little background about yourself?

I moved to Devon over 20 years ago with Balfour Beatty as part of a small team to undertake the design and build of two new bypasses. I started in a secretarial role but over time became interested in the technical side of road construction. I decided to take the plunge as a trainee highways technician. Balfour Beatty supported my ambition to do this and have continued to encourage me to further myself – from this first move from secretary to technician through to my academic studies. I have now been working as a Highways Technician for Balfour Beatty on the A30/A35 in Exeter for 17 years.

 

Why did you choose Highways Distance Learning?

Balfour Beatty are really supportive when it comes to upskilling and believe in having experts in the business. As a full time employee, I needed a way to work and study simultaneously. My goal was to develop in my role at the same as progressing academically. This, however, meant finding a course which I could do outside of working hours – the Highways Distance Learning course allowed me to do just that!

 

Which courses have you completed via Highways Distance Learning?

I have completed; Highways Maintenance, Highways Technology, Highways Legislation and Administration, Highways Materials and Testing and produced a project on current drainage challenge on the Balfour Beatty joint venture project on the A30/A35 in Devon and Dorset.

 

What was the most enjoyable aspect of your courses?

Similarly to my work with Balfour Beatty, I feel my strength lies in projects – I found producing in-depth, high quality coursework as part of my course one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things about academic study. Likewise, I love learning from others, whether in my role at Balfour Beatty or with my tutors. The insights and interactions I had with my tutors reminded me how much I love the highways sector.

 

What has been most valuable to you?

Everything I have learnt I can apply to my work. I feel I can contribute an expertise and understanding of highways projects which benefits my professional progression, but which can also help others in my team. Just like the Balfour Beatty values; I am a trusted expert in my field, and this is recognised by the business and my peers and colleagues. I put this down to the constant support from all my tutors and the administrative team for the feedback on my marked assignments. These comments meant a lot and gave me the confidence to continue.

 

What made you choose Bath College?

I was specifically looking for a distance learning course and Bath College not only provided what I required but had a Highways Distance Learning course in Highway Engineering. I do not come from an engineering background but I did bring practical experience from a live project environment and I was glad they recognised the value of this. I was pleased to see that there was a great range of course covering all the main topics and my areas of interest, so I knew I’d be gaining a well-rounded education there. The college was also very helpful in all aspects of my enrolment.

 

What do you plan to do with your new found knowledge?

The knowledge that I have gained has already benefited me in my current role – Balfour Beatty believe in having expert, trusted employees delivering their projects so I feel I can contribute and support the business even better than before. Whilst studying, I consolidated my knowledge of the practical skills I learn of the job with an academic understanding. I now feel equipped and confident and aim to progress to a managerial position with Balfour Beatty.

 

What piece of advice would you give to students looking to enrol on a Highways Distance Learning course?

Don’t keep thinking about it, do it! It was the best decision I made, and I know it has provided me with new skills and experiences to reach my goals and strive to progress professionally and personally. As a mature student, in full-time employment, attending college and stepping so far out of my comfort zone was a scary thought and difficult to balance but I have truly reaped the rewards. If you have an employer who supports you the way Balfour Beatty supported me, it is possible to have the best of both worlds; work and study.

End of Year Engineering Awards celebrates student success

 

Bath College Engineering Department held their annual End of Year Presentation Evening in celebration of the hard work and effort expended by the students over the course of the year.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), family and friends were invited and many were impressed to see not just the quantity of work produced, but the high standards set and achieved.

 

The event prizes were sponsored by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Stephen Pearson (IET member) presented the awards, with Maurice Poole, another member, giving a short motivational speech.

  • Best Welding Level 1 Student – Ryan Gosman
  • Best Welding Level 2 Student – Charlie Purchase
  • Best Turning Student – Miles Tucker

IET Engineering Awards

  • Best Overall Student – Oliver Clark – £100 prize
  • Best Level 1 student – Kieron Bradley – £75 Prize
  • Best Level 2 student – Jae Crawford – £75 Prize

The IET Engineering Awards saw three winners collect their prize for the best student in each category.

 

Jae Crawford won the Best Level 2 student award which he was given £75 from the IET. Jae has also been offered an apprenticeship with Dyson which he hopes to start in September.

He says, “I’m looking forward to learning more about engineering and starting my career, it’s great I get to earn money at the same time.”

 

Oliver Clark won the Best Overall student award. He has completed Level 1 and 2 Engineering and is now looking at a wide variety of progression options, such as apprenticeships and further education. The course has provided him with an industry standard qualification and he now has skills in fitting, turning, milling, welding and CAD. Oliver says, “I now have a great portfolio of work which I’ll be able to show to potential employers and I’m looking forward to the next step of my engineering journey.”

 

Matt Driver, Mechanical Engineering lecturer said, “The standard of work this year has been excellent and the awards evening was the culmination of a very successful year at Bath College with over 90% successful in their qualification.

Bath College’s Technology Department inspires young minds at the Bath and West Show

 

Last week saw nearly 20,000 people come through the Imagineering Tent at the Royal Bath and West show.
 
Children were immediately drawn to the Bath College stand as there were so many interactive activities from the College’s Technology Department, promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects.
 
Activities included wooden puzzles made by the carpenters, stone carving initials with the stonemasons, a steady-hand pipe game made by plumbers, bricklaying, bridge building, metal pipe sawing, robot programming and more.

The Imagineering tent is run by the Imagineering Foundation, a charity whose aim is to introduce young people of 8-16 years to the exciting world of engineering, science and technology through fun, hands-on activities and personal involvement.
 
Nearly 200 people took part in the sawing competition – with an under 15 and over 15 category, with the fastest times winning a £15 voucher.

Bath College’s stand was alongside a whole host of other businesses and colleges including 105 Bn Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Bahçeşehir College, Baker Hughes, BMT, Bridgwater & Taunton College, EDF Energy, GE Aviation, UWE, IET and Wessex SETPOINT, Leonardo Helicopters, Rolls-Royce, Wessex Water and Wiltshire College.
 
Bath College staff enjoyed working with thousands of children, adults and even some VIPs including Bath & West Society joint Presidents, Earl and Countess Bathurst and Jacob Rees-Mogg MP, take part in their carefully crafted activities.

Live bricklaying demonstrations and activities were going on over the first two days of the show, giving the other companies a chance to show what they could create.
 
On Friday and Saturday, stonemasonry students Gary and Callum were outside the Imagineering tent crafting some impressive work for all to see. A stonecarving of ‘Yoda’ by Gary was also up for grabs in a raffle to raise money for Wateraid.
 

 

There were happy faces all round as children had their Imagineering passport stamped after they had taken part in one of Bath College’s many interactive activities. It was wonderful to see so many talented children, we hope they will be enrolling in a course at the College in 5-10 years!

Bath College’s Top Three Apprenticeships of the Month

 

April Edition

 

Level 3 technical engineering at Rotork PLC

This is a 4-year apprenticeship that includes, Service workshops, Electronics, Mechanics, R&D and Production engineering.

The wage for this Apprenticeship is £10,263, and you’ll also get an annual bonus, private healthcare, pension matched 9% and access to the Cycle to work scheme, some great perks!

Rotork offers three apprenticeship schemes:

  1. Engineering apprenticeship
  2. Craft apprenticeship
  3. Administration apprenticeship

Level 2 Adult care worker apprenticeship at Safe & sound Homecare LTD

This is a 16-month apprenticeship, of which the main activities involve, Personal Care, Shopping, Domestic Services, Bathing/Showering/Strip Wash, getting residents dressed/undressed, Attending appointments (Doctor, Hairdresser, etc.), 24-hour live-in care, Financial Care, Social Care, Hair and Skin Care, Welfare Checks and many other services

The wage for this Apprenticeship is a generous £6.15 per hour on weekdays and £7.15 on weekends.

Level 3 Electro technology apprenticeship at MW smart home LTD 

This is a 36-month apprenticeship and you would be working mainly on domestic electronics on new build properties or listed buildings that need renovating. The successful candidate will be completing a level 3 Electrical Installation Qualification at the same time as working with their employer, which will also include English or Maths functional skills if required. Before you undertake this Apprenticeship you’ll need to attend an initial assessment session at our Somer Valley Campus. The wage for this Apprenticeship is £3.90 per hour.

Experience Business and Technology Day

During February half term (18th-22nd) we will be hosting an event where you can experience what it’s like to be a Bath College student for the day. This is an opportunity to get hands-on experience with a course that you’re interested in, help decide between two different courses, or even whether College is right for you.

On each day of the week we will be hosting a different experience day covering a different department. You can register for as many days as you would like and pick up to two workshops to attend per day.

Engineering Department at Bath College celebrates Student Talent

The Mechanical Engineering Awards were given out to apprentices for their projects.
 
Simon Preston, Mechanical Engineering Lecturer said: “I am very proud of how both the full time students and apprentices have done this year, moving to a new qualification with a huge amount of work to cover within the 9 months; all have passed with the quality exceeding previous years.
 
“The learners that got awards deserved them as the standard was very high throughout the whole year.”

The Engineering Awards saw four winners collect their prize for the best student in each category.
 
Stephanie Smith (pictured below) won the Best Overall student award. She is starting an apprenticeship with British Aerospace (BAE) in September for which there were 3000 applicants and only 42 jobs.
 
She commented: “I am looking forward to learning more about engineering in a world class company, with the support that brings.
 
“The apprenticeship is a great way to start my career and I’m looking forward to the development I can get from it.”
 
Matt Driver, Engineering Lecturer said “We’re really proud of Steph and her achievement in getting such a prestigious apprenticeship. She has performed really well across the whole year and has set high standards for other students to emulate.
 
“We wish her continued success in the coming years and look forward to her coming back and letting us know how her career is progressing.”
 
Matt continued: “The awards evening was the culmination of a very successful year at Bath College with over 90% successful in their qualification.
 
“Work Experience was a particular success this year generating lots of interest from employers, many of whom went on to offer jobs and apprentices directly to the students with no further interviewing, such is the strength and impact of Bath College.
 
“We look forward to seeing our students returning on various local Apprenticeships in the near future.”
