Celebrating Success Case Study – International Foundation Year Student of the Year

 

Bath College hosts the University of Bath International Foundation Year. This is a one year full time course which prepares International Students for entry into their chosen course at The University of Bath. The IFY course covers the key principles, theories and practical skills which are the standard entry criteria for the University of Bath, and broadly based on the A-level syllabus.

 

Claudia was our International Foundation Year Student of the Year at our 2019 Celebrating Success Awards. Claudia’s citation from her tutor Larissa was absolutely glowing, and we have no doubt that Claudia was the perfect choice to receive this award, Larissa commented

 

“Claudia was a pleasure to work with in and out of the classroom, as she contributed with happiness and enthusiasm to college life. Some students are, unknowingly, a great asset to teachers, as they set a culture of excellence and academic rigour in the classrooms, the laboratory and in student accommodation.”

 

Claudia is now studying Chemical Engineering at Bath University, and we knew we had to ask her about her time on her IFY course!

 

What course did you study at Bath College?

I studied on the International Foundation Year.

 

Why did you choose to study on the International Foundation Year?

I knew I wanted to go to the University of Bath and the foundation year was a path to do so with my USA high school diploma.

 

What was the most interesting thing you did on the International Foundation Year?

The Labs were really interesting and a great way to solidify knowledge from lectures.

 

What is a typical day like as an IFY student?

Starting at around 9:30 am, we had class until lunch then a break then more class until around 5pm. Most of the week would be a mix of classes around these timings, though it was rare to have a day where the only break was for lunch. I had a lot of free time.

 

What are you doing now?

I am now studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath!

 

What are your aspirations for the future?

I would like to become a Chartered Engineer and to work on solving problems we have today such as fossil fuel alternatives and pollution management.

 

What advice would you give to people looking to start the International Foundation Year?

Work hard but also take some time to explore the city. Bath is beautiful and so nice to just take a walk around. Also, you’ll have a head start on all the freshers in your first year at Uni!

 

How do you feel about winning Bath College’s International Foundation Year Student of the Year?

I am so honored and thankful to be chosen for the award. It was such a nice surprise after so much hard work last year!

College students experience being a Student Nurse for a day at University of the West of England

 
Seven students from the Bath College Care Academy spent the day in Bristol at the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences Department of University of the West of England (UWE).
 
During the day they were paired with current first and second year Nursing Students and attended lectures and seminars with them.
 

 
They were able to find out more about Nursing study programmes and about student life. One student said “I learnt lots from the students, I asked lots of questions, they were very nice and they tried to answer all my questions.”
 
During lunch there was a reflective practice session where students were able to speak to both students and lecturers to find out further information.
 
The students really enjoyed the day. One student said  “It makes thinking about going to University less overwhelming, and I now have an understanding of the process”

Why study a Degree Level Course at Bath College?

 

University isn’t for everyone; not everyone wants to move away, not everyone wants to take out huge student loans, some people simply cannot afford it and others are worried they won’t get on with University life. This means, for most, the only options remaining are going straight into work, or looking for a traineeship or higher apprenticeship. However, there is a third option; you can study a Degree at Bath College.

 

At Bath College we have a range of degree level courses, ranging from Creative Enterprise to Applied Computing, meaning there’s something for everyone, without having to uproot your life and move miles across the country, this is ideal for people who don’t want or are unable to move away. We’re going to look at some of the pro’s for studying a degree at Bath College.

 

 

Expense (or lack of)

It’s no secret that University is expensive, you have tuition fees, living expenses, travel expenses to and from campus (or to visit home in the holidays), and then there will be hidden costs, like studio fees, trip fees and printing and equipment costs. These can all add up, making University an expensive endeavour.

Whilst the degree level courses at Bath College aren’t free, they are considerably cheaper. Most Higher Education courses start at £2,770 and rise to £7,700. Compare this with average University fees of £9,250 per year and you’ve got a clear winner. You can also still apply for student loans to help cover this cost, or a Higher Education Bursary. You’ve also got the advantage of being able to live at home, erasing those expensive student living costs.

 

Lifestyle Fit

Almost going hand in hand with our lack of expense, is the way some of courses can fit around your lifestyle. Not everyone looking to study a degree is fresh out of College or Sixth Form, and even if you are, you may have commitments that you can’t move around, such as a full time job or being a full time carer or parent. Some of our degree courses are evening courses, or distance learning courses (study from home), meaning you can fit them around your life, getting a degree alongside your other commitments, without one impacting the other.

 

One to One support

University is a popular option for Higher Education, and lots of University courses are full to the brim. Whilst this is not necessarily a bad thing, as it shows that as a community we are striving to get as educated as possible, it does mean that classes are very full, and it’s harder to get that crucial one to one support with your tutor. Class sizes at Bath College are smaller, and there are more opportunities to talk to your tutor, allowing you to ask questions, clarify your learning and get that important critical feedback to help you improve your work.

 

Continuous Study

You can complete one of our courses and progress onto another, or you can take your new found knowledge and enter the work place, or look for a higher apprenticeship. For example, the HNC in Business can progress straight into the work place, or onto the HND in Business. You can also opt to finish your study at University, completing a Bachelors Degree fully and have it accredited by the University. You have a whole range of paths ahead of you, rather than a solid three years of study, with each year giving you a qualification, rather than parts of a whole qualification.

 

Employability

At Bath College we have connections with many local businesses in a variety of sectors, and we work very closely with them. We look at local industry demands and tailor our courses and learning to these demands, meaning our students leave College able to go into industries in Bath and begin gaining experience in their chosen sectors, giving them better grounding to move forwards in their chosen industry. For some the idea of being able to work within the City of Bath is tantalising, for other it may be a necessity due to commitments, we prepare you to enter the local industry and you will have the opportunity to meet and network with lots of local employers, rather than prepare you for your chosen industry generically.

 

TEF Silver

TEF stands for Teaching Excellence Framework, and is used to examine how good the quality of an institutions teaching is. We share our TEF Silver ranking with Universities such as University of Liverpool, University College London and Warwick University. TEF Silver is awarded to Higher Education providers who ‘deliver high-quality teaching, learning and outcomes for its students, and consistently exceeds “rigorous national quality requirements” for higher education in the UK.’ (The Complete University Guide). Studying a Degree at Bath College isn’t going to be any less valuable than studying a Degree at a University, the standard of teaching that we have is amongst some of the best Universities in the UK, and we get you ready for the work place in the process.

 

Familiarity

If you’ve just spent several years at College, studying BTECS, Apprenticeships or Diplomas, you will be familiar with the campus, the journey and the tutors. If you have any problems with anxiety, or any reason why you would rather not move away to University, then you can opt to stay at College and stay in a familiar environment. This can be really beneficial for being able to settle into the demands of Degree level study, and skipping over that bedding in process. You won’t need to familiarise yourself with your journey to campus, the nearest shop, the best bus into town, or your group of new flatmates; as it’s been a part of your life now for several years.

Case Study: Pearl Bartlett, Access to Higher Education

 

 

Pearl is an Access to Higher Education student hoping to go on to University. She has overcome many personal obstacles and has showed a tenacity to learn that will serve her well in the future. Pearl has also recently won a prestigious award for her hard work as a voluntary peer mentor on a ward and her assistance with helping to keep people well, the NHS Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Award for Recovery and Hope. This was presented by none other than Frank Bruno! We caught up with Pearl to ask her about her experiences and aspirations:

 

 

What course did you study at Bath College?

I studied GCSE English and Maths at Bath College in 2016/17 and after successfully passing them, last year I began Access to HE Health and Social Care part time. I will be completing the Access course this year.

 

What was/is the most enjoyable aspect of your course?

The most enjoyable part was studying Psychology, this allowed me to gain further knowledge into mental illnesses and insight into therapies that I had undergone myself to get well.

 

What have you done on your course that you feel is most valuable?

Psychology and Sociology have given me the most valuable knowledge base to assist me further with going to University and furthering my career.

 

What made you apply to Bath College?

I looked at the local college in my hometown and then Bath. The success rate, support and the general feedback from previous students made me decide that Bath was in my best interests.

 

What do you want to after College?

After college I want to go to University and be the first generation in my family to go, but also to see change within the treatment of people with poor mental health.

 

What piece of advice would you give to students looking to study Access to HE?

The advice I would give to future students is take on board the advice given in study skills and pace yourself. Never leave assignments until the last minute and always ask for help if you need it. The lecturers are helpful and want to assist you and allow you to get the best from yourself. Their support is amazing.

 

How did you overcome your personal challenges to complete the course?

I suffered with extremely poor mental health and was very scared to move to a new city and begin education again. However, being honest with the lecturers about my wellbeing and being able to talk to fellow students about my personal journey really boosted my confidence and gave me a sense of pride.

 

What was the award you won and why did you win it?

I was recently a winner of the NHS Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Award for Recovery and Hope. I was nominated for this prestigious award for my volunteer role as a peer mentor. I won this due to the nominations I received and for ongoing presentation of my story and explanations and promotion of the peer mentoring project. I volunteer supporting mentees on the ward and within the community assisting them to keep well.

 

 

We’re very proud of all Pearls achievements whilst at College and special congratulations are in order for this incredible Award. We’re positive you’ll smash it at University and we wish you all the best with your future aspirations!

Access to Higher Education students celebrate their success, before heading off to top Universities

 

Bath College held an award ceremony to celebrate the incredible achievements of the Access to Higher Education students at the Shrubbery restaurant last week. Excited student

 

The students were presented with their course certificates over a prosecco and canapé reception, followed by specially nominated awards.
 

The Access to Higher Education course provides students with a nationally recognised qualification and an alternative career pathway for those who want to study at university.
 

Carolyn Guy, Learning Co-ordinator for the Access to HE department, said that:

“Many of our students gained the confidence to pursue career goals and ambitions which they would not have thought possible a year ago. This event was a celebration of their hard work, determination and success. The students created a culture of excellence and support of one another.”
 

The top prize of the afternoon was the much coveted Roper Prize, named after Brian and Maggie Roper, who were incredibly generous benefactors of Bath College who left a legacy gift to the College to recognise the achievements of students, particularly on the Access Course. This year there were five Roper prize winners, who were nominated by staff for outstanding dedication to their studies.

Samantha has a three-year-old son and took the Access course to become a midwife, something that she was nervous about juggling before starting: “Luckily, I have a very supportive family who will care for my son when I need time for my assignments.
 

“College help part-fund my son’s pre-school hours every week to ensure I can commit to the course. This means I have more time at college to do work and ensure I can attend all my lessons.
 

“The Access Course has really helped boost my confidence, it’s supported me to receive offers from universities for competitive courses I would never have been able to achieve on my own.
 

“It’s also allowed me to improve my academic knowledge and set me up for university whilst making great supportive friends who are also going through the same process for their goals.”

After presenting the awards Laurel commented: “Listening to the list of universities you have been excepted to I am so proud to hear the depth and breadth of courses you’re going onto.

A-level and GCSE results day 2017: What you need to know before you collect your marks

 

Good luck to everyone picking up their GCSE and A-level results – we wish you all the best for your next adventure. If you’re still unsure about results day, we have some tips for you. Stay calm and read our handy guide, which will help you with your preparations. 
 

When is results day?
 

A-levels: Thursday August 17th
GCSEs: Thursday August 24th
 

How to prepare for results day
 

Nerves are normal, but try to manage this.

We’ve all got different ways of coping with nerves, so follow what works for you whether it’s talking to someone, listening to music or watching a film. Get an early night so you’ll feel fresh and awake in the morning.
 


 

Focus on your own situation

With so many people getting results, there can be a lot going on in the run-up to results day and the day itself. If you’re feeling nervous, take things one step at a time – if it helps, take a break from social media and switch off.
 

Make sure you know how to collect your results

The time you’re able to pick up your results will depend on your school. Make sure you know what time you’ll get there and how you’ll get there. Think about whether you’d like to collect your results alone or if you’d like some moral support from friends or family.
 

On the day itself: what do do when you collect your results
 

Make sure you celebrate your achievement

If you’ve achieved your grades, now is the time to celebrate. If you’re disappointed with your grades, speak to someone you trust. You may be disappointed, but don’t let this stop you pursuing your dreams – exam results are important but they’re not the whole picture.
 


 

Thank a teacher for their support

Teachers are just as nervous on results day, and want you to do well. If you’re leaving school for college or university, make a teacher smile and spend a couple of minutes thanking them for the support they’ve given you and all that marking!
 

For students collecting their GCSE results
 

Are you away and unable to collect your results?

It’s best to be around on results day, but you can arrange for your school to post your exam results. If you’d like someone to collect your results, check with your school as they may need a signed letter and ID to do this.
 

• Didn’t get the grades you hoped for? Resits are available

You need at least a C in English and maths to continue with your studies. College and sixth forms will offer resits for these, as employers and universities will look for these grades. If you’ve missed the grades you needed in other subjects, speak to your sixth form or college for advice.
 


• Think about alternatives, and keep your options open

A-levels are only one option, but you can also study at college, leading directly to the career you’re interested in, or on an apprenticeship. Check with your local college to find out about courses on offer and to speak to a careers adviser if needed.

Advice for students collecting A-level results
 

Check UCAS Track
It’s worth checking UCAS Track before you go in to collect your grades so that you know what to expect. Knowing you’ve got your university place will also relieve your nerves when it comes to opening your envelope.
 

Have a Plan A and a Plan B
Having a Plan B will help you to feel calm the night before results day, and on results day if things don’t go as expected. The most important thing to know is that there are many options available, which will allow you to progress with your education.
 


 

Make sure you understand the clearing process

According to UCAS, just under 65,000 students found a university place through clearing last year. It can get busy on results day, so make sure you understand the clearing process beforehand. Read this UCAS clearing survival guide to prepare and find out how you can enter clearing.

Seek advice from your parents and teachers

Don’t go it alone -help is at hand, and your teachers will be there at results day to celebrate with you or give advice. Most of all, ask questions to make sure you understand everything and are making an informed decision.
 

If you’re entering clearing, keep calm and stay organised.

Find a quiet space for phone calls and have a notepad and pen ready to take down information. You’ll also need your UCAS number, your exam grades and your clearing number (which will be given to you on UCAS Track if you’re eligible for clearing).
