Course Overview

This construction industry recognised qualification at Level 1 is most suited for those aged 16-18. It will teach you the basics of Maintaining and using hand tools, preparing and using portable power tools, producing woodworking joints and the principles of building construction.

You will learn Health and Safety within the construction industry, and you could work towards gaining a CSCS card. This provides proof of an individual's training, skills and ability to work safely on UK construction sites.

This Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Diploma is most suited for people aged 16-18.
A City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery.
There will be an initial skills VIP session and you should have grades of 3 and 2 in Maths and English.
There will be practical workshop sessions and computer based/classroom theory sessions. You will be assessed through workshop-based practical assessments and multiple choice end-of-unit knowledge tests.

On completion of this course;

  • You could progress on to a Foundation year Technical Level 2 Site Carpentry course.
  • You could move on to an apprenticeship.
  • You might decide to go into employment within the industry.
You will be required to attend a minimum of 3 days per week at College.
You will undertake a range of activities that will give you the knowledge, skills and behaviours to increase your understanding of the world of work and improve your future employment prospects. This will include work experience, and could include work related projects, site visits, CV development and support for job applications.
You will have regular 1-2-1 meetings with your study program tutor to monitor your progress on all aspects of your study programme and group tutorials/meetings which cover important life skills, and progression routes.

Bath College's Construction Skills Centre is a purpose built facility for Carpentry and Joinery with workshops that are well-equipped with a range of tools and equipment. Well-appointed classrooms with access to laptops and pcs to enhance learning in workshops and classrooms providing links between the practical and the knowledge-based aspects of the course.
