How will I be taught and assessed?

Our teaching and assessment methods not only develop your industry knowledge and practical skills at Level 3, but incorporate the skills sought after by employers. You will gain practical husbandry and employability skills working with our onsite animal collection, which houses a range of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates, you also develop employability skills by completing 150 hours of work experience (one day a week) in a placement of your choosing.

Trips, theory sessions, guest speakers and self-directed study provide you with the depth of knowledge and understanding to be successful in a supervisory/management role and higher education. Most of your units are assessed through internally set assignments. You can expect one or two assignments per unit and these are graded Pass/Merit/Distinction. Assignments may be of a practical and/or written nature. There are also 3 externally set and marked exams within the qualification, two are in your first year of study and one in the second year. These exams are also graded at Pass/Merit/Distinction.

What can I do next?
Level 3 Animal Management fully prepares you for employment or an apprenticeship in a variety of sectors such as animal collections, pet shops, rescue centres and animal charities. Career opportunities include Senior Animal Technician, Zookeeper, Welfare Officer, Pet Shop Supervisor/Manager. These courses also provide UCAS points to enable you to study a wide variety of HE courses at university such as Zoology, Behaviour, Wildlife conservation.
Are there any additional costs?

Trips - Several trips to relevant establishments form part of this course which may incur costs, where this is the case details will be sent home prior to the event.

PPE - Students will need to purchase steel toe capped boots and navy overalls for their practical lessons and need to pay a 10 refundable deposit for a locker.

What is the aim of the course?
The aim of this course is to provide you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to manage an animal collection. On successful completion of the programme you achieve a nationally recognised qualification that will open up many exciting career paths for you - progress onto Higher Education (university), an apprenticeship or employment as an animal care professional at supervisory/management level.
