This course is for those who have a strong interest in moving into the performing arts industry looking to access the worlds of theatre, film and television. Regular sessions with industry professionals in movement, voice, technical theatre, design, fitness, directing and stage and screen acting, combined with structured mentoring and career planning, will allow you to specialise in areas of theatre making and production craft.

On successfully completing this programme, you will achieve a UAL Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts Level 3.

Five GCSEs at C/4 or above including English Language and Maths, or UAL/BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts at Merit Level. All candidates will be invited to an interview and workshop audition where they will be asked to present a monologue.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This highly practical course involves working in workshop, rehearsal and classroom settings. You will study in classes, smaller groups and individually and you will be expected to work independently outside of timetabled contact time. There are no written exams at any point in the academic year. Assessment is continuous throughout the year, and all assessments have a practical element accompanied by written coursework. Your Theory Tutor will support you in dedicated lessons to complete written journals, evaluations, essays and research that underpin your practical work in the rehearsal room where you will work towards a portfolio of varied practical performances.

Practical learning is enhanced by collaborating with professional technicians, directors, choreographers, musical directors and set designers who will work alongside you. You will develop work both independently and as a member of a team. Alongside exploring existing theatrical pieces, you will be expected to take part in writing, producing and the performance of original work that engages and challenges both you as an actor and the audience.

Are there any additional costs?

A studio fee of 80 will be requested from students at the start of each academic year as a contribution towards the cost of course resources, theatre trips, and a professional headshot at the start of second year. In an average year, our students watch 20 plays in Bath, Bristol and beyond. We subsidise the cost of the tickets, so the studio fee payment covers the total cost of trips for the year. (Bursary support is available to help cover the studio fee).

What else do I need to know?
What is the aim of the course?

You will have the opportunity to learn about what it takes to be an actor and theatre maker, covering key aspects of collaboration such as teamwork and communication. You will explore a variety of different performance styles and how to use research and reflection to improve your work. Throughout the year you will work as a performance company working in the three areas to develop live and recorded performance work. As well as solo and group performance material, you will learn about key aspects of the industry including design, voice and movement, technical theatre, acting for screen, stage management and more. As you progress through the course, you will be get an opportunity to specialise in a chosen field while receiving industry level training to prepare you for your next steps.

Those who successfully complete their programme will achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts - the equivalent of three A Levels.
