This Level 2 qualification will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to support children and young people's learning in the classroom. You will learn about the main stages of child development, promoting positive behaviours, and the role of communication to establish professional relationships with children and adults alike. The lessons will cover supporting a variety of pupils through a range of learning activities, and give you the opportunity to reflect on how you can improve your own and team practice.

This course is tailored for those individuals who already work in a school or have a voluntary placement in an educational setting. You will be expected to attend College once a week to obtain the theory element of the programme, which will include written assignments. In addition, your practice will be observed and assessed in your workplace.

Entry Requirements

This course is aimed at adults aged 18 and 19+. You will need to already work in a school or find a placement for at least one day per week in a role supporting children and young people's learning and obtain a DBS check. You will also be expected to have GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths at Grade C/4, or be willing to work towards a qualification in Maths.

All applicants will be invited to an interview with the course tutor which may include an initial assessment to ensure the qualification is appropriate for them. It will also be the opportunity to ask any specific questions you might have about the programme.

What topics are covered?

This course has 11 mandatory units and will cover some of the following areas:

  • Schools as organisations
  • Supporting children and young people's health and safety
  • Supporting learning activities
  • Understandng children and young people's development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in schools

It includes 4 additional optional units:

  • Providing displays in schools
  • Supporting children and young people at meal or snack times
  • Supporting children and young people with specific educational needs
  • Supporting children and young people's travel outside of the setting
How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught by a specialist tutor via face-to-face lessons in the classroom. Your learning will be enhanced through group activities including presentations, discussions and project work. There will be additional information sessions on various topics like Mental Health Awareness or Interview Skills.

You will be expected to complete a number of written assignments at the required standard, and receive workplace observations where you will be given supportive feedback to enhance your learning further. Units are assessed via a variety of methods: presentations, discussions, journals and observations in the setting. There are no exams for this qualification.

What can I do next?

Upon successful completion of the course, you can find employment in a role supporting children and young people's learning. Jobs you can apply for include Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant.
