Course Overview

The course provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of photographic process and other design related disciplines. The programme has an emphasis on creative thinking, developing skills and ideas, preparing you for progression into higher education or the creative industry. You will be encouraged to explore a range of topics and themes. You will gain core skills in the use of digital cameras, lighting and studio- based equipment, Adobe Photoshop, darkroom and alternative processes, graphic design, moving image and printmaking. You will also develop knowledge of a wide range of historical and contemporary practitioners and photographic genres. These will include portrait, fashion, environmental, street, landscape, location, studio, still life and product photography. Throughout the course you will build a portfolio of photographic work which will support your progression onto higher level courses or into the creative industries.

Materials While we aim to provide all the basic material, you may also need to get some equipment which is specific to your own creative practice. Study Trips the cost of any study trips to locations either inside or outside the UK are additional to any enrolment fees and you will be notified of them well in advance. If you cannot afford any of the additional cost, you may be eligible for a bursary or financial help through the learner support fund.

To study Photography Level 3 the requirements are 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include English Language or Maths.
Teaching is delivered through guided sessions in classrooms, darkroom and workshops, alongside research activities and gallery visits . There is a practical emphasis on experimentation, exploration and problem solving as well as a written element when looking at an artist's work. Demonstrations will be given and you will work on specially set tasks that help you to understand techniques and enhance your skills. Assessment is ongoing through tutorials, peer reviews and assignments - your final unit is graded (pass, merit, or distinction). You will gain a solid foundation of knowledge, and develop your core creative skills. In addition to a portfolio of work, on successful completion you will be awarded a nationally recognised qualification at the appropriate level, issued by University of the Arts London (UAL).
After successfully completing the course, you can progress into careers including graphic design, animation, media graphics and web design. You might also want to continue your studies at undergraduate level - our students have gone on to study at a variety of universities, including University of the Arts London, Bath Spa University, and Plymouth College of Arts.
Level 3 Photography at Bath College has been designed to help you gain confidence, establish a solid foundation of knowledge, and develop your core creative skills. In addition to a portfolio of work, on successful completion you will be awarded a nationally recognised qualification, issued by University of the Arts London (UAL).
