Art for Beginners (23/24)

Course Overview

This art and design course will provide you with the opportunity to actively participate in structured sessions to develop understanding and confidence with the production of visual imagery. Studies will start with an emphasis on observation and drawing. Followed by subsequent translation to develop work across a range of processes that may include painting, collage and printmaking.

Continuous support, guidance and advice will be on hand throughout. The classes offer an informative and conducive learning opportunity that shares and builds upon experience through practical activity and reflection.

Returning students have the opportunity to further apply knowledge and experience to extend and develop their practice.

This course 'knits in' well for students who have experience in other art and design disciplines as it offers an underpinning experience to develop visual thinking and exploration of a range of materials, techniques and processes. It can also be used to make new work, suitable for a portfolio and refresh practice.

Sally Gaden has been the Printmaking Subject Leader at Bath College for 27 years and has tutored students in their progressive Art and Design development through the levels across the range of courses and has been Level 2 Art and Design Course Leader. Trained in Illustration and Graphic Design, Sally has taught at a range of FE Institutions and is Visiting Lecturer at Gloucester and Falmouth Universities. Sally was Artist in Residence at The Museum of Rural Life, Waterperry House and Gardens, Oxford. She was awarded the Eaton Fund to facilitate her specialism in 3-dimensional mould making, casting and fabrication to complete her MA in Mulitdisciplinary Printmaking at UWE in June 2020 which she achieved with Distinction and was awarded the Clifford Moss 3D prize.

The group sessions will be structured with all processes, materials and techniques demonstrated and explained. Students will be encouraged to creatively explore and experiment within the conducive learning workshop environment, supported through one-to-one tutor contact and small group discussion.
Materials, tools and equipment will be provided.
