Veterinary Nursing and Level 3 Animal Care students from Bath College recently returned from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to South Africa, where they explored the stunning Entabeni Game Reserve in partnership with Gap Africa Projects.

During their time on the reserve, students took part in a wide range of practical activities designed to deepen their understanding of wildlife veterinary medicine and conservation.

They learned how to set up camera traps, went on guided safari drives to observe native species in their natural habitat, and gained valuable knowledge from experienced wildlife veterinarians. The trip provided a rich mix of both theoretical and hands-on learning.

One of the highlights of the experience was the chance to track Africa’s iconic “Big Five”, lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. This opportunity not only inspired excitement but also helped students understand the vital role these animals play in conservation efforts and the economic sustainability of wildlife reserves.

Outside of the structured learning activities, students spent their evenings gathered around the campfire, roasting marshmallows, relaxing by the pool, and taking in the breathtaking landscape.

On their first day, students encountered a wide range of wildlife, including several species of mammals and birds. They attended a talk on animal diseases and parasites, and successfully set up four camera traps, which would be reviewed after two weeks to monitor local wildlife activity.

Here’s what some of the students had to say:

  • Eve, a Level 3 Animal Management student, shared: “We had the best day with very knowledgeable guides who answered all our questions on the flora, fauna, and African culture… and we saw lots of cool animals!”
  • Elaine said: “Amazing first day. Learned all about different animal poo! Saw lions, hippos, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, waterbuck, kudu, rhinos, and loads of birds.”
  • Gia added: “Magical first day. Saw two of the Big Five and had a talk on different diseases and parasites, as well as set camera traps!”

A heartfelt thank you goes to the dedicated staff at Bath College and Gap Africa Projects for providing such an unforgettable and impactful experience, one that will undoubtedly shape our students’ future careers and personal journeys.
