Student welfare, wellbeing, and safeguarding

Your safety and wellbeing are a top priority at Bath College.

About student welfare and wellbeing

Student welfare is the system of support services that help students. This includes safeguarding.

Student wellbeing refers to the student's health and happiness.

Safeguarding commitment

Bath College create a safe, supportive, and inclusive space where everyone can succeed. Please see the safeguarding policies, best practices, and resources on this page.

What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the policy we use to protect the health, wellbeing, and human rights of our students.

This way, students are safe from harm, abuse, and neglect.

We use different policies and practices to promote a safe, respectful culture.

Our commitment

  • Protect students so that all feel safe and secure at the college
  • Support the mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing of our students
  • Encourage reporting so students can report problems without fear
  • Train staff to understand and use safeguarding policies and processes

Safeguarding policies

Bath College's safeguarding policies keep students safe.

Key policies include the Safeguarding and Prevent Policy.

These are guidelines to help recognise and respond to safety concerns.

Online Safety

Bath College takes online safety extremely seriously.

We teach students to stay safe online through our Personal Development provision. This includes:

  • Social Media Guidelines: The best practices for safe social media use.
  • Cyberbullying Information: How to spot and respond to cyberbullying

Bath College offers counselling for students partnered with Off the Record. It is available for learners under 25.

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) accredits all three of the counsellors who work with Bath College students. And all counsellors follow the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice.

The Student Counselling Service provide students with a private space to speak about their problems.

Counselling can help with:

  • Difficult relationships
  • Stress, depression, and trauma
  • Life crisis
  • Loss
  • Transitions
  • Phobias
  • Sexual identity
  • Anger, stress, anxiety, and fear
  • Personal or learning stress
  • Mental, physical, and sexual health
  • Self-harm or eating difficulties

If you want help with any of the above, send a confidential text to 07791 766784 or email studentcounsellingservice@bathcollege.ac.uk.

You will get an appointment within one month of contacting the counselling team.

Health Services

Our Nurse runs drop in sessions for students to seek confidential advice on any aspect of their health. This can range from stop smoking support to healthy eating advice or contraception to sexual health advice.

We also run a number of awareness events over the year as part of our personal development provision which gives students the opportunity to find out more about specific well-being topics.

You can access the College Nurse through the Student Welfare team, by clicking here to email the team or by messaging 07976 916058.

Tutorial Support

If you are a full-time student, you will have a personal tutor. This tutor will:

  • Help you to set targets to progress through your course
  • Watch your attendance and progress
  • Introduce you to the college.
  • Check if you need extra learning support
  • Help you improve your study skills
  • Write a reference for you when you complete your course
  • Listen to your personal issues
  • Guide you to extra support
  • Help you get opportunities outside of college
  • Meet for a one-to-one
  • Review your progress 3 times a year

Part-time students

If you are a part-time student, your tutor will give you the same support as a full-time student. However, you may not get as many written reviews as a full-time student.

Parent information

Tutors also help students with personal issues that may affect their studies. You will be invited to meet your child's tutor at the start of the course.

This is to help you find out more about college life and the course they will study.
