For Lynton, it all started with an apprenticeship and HNC at Bath College.
And now, he's a successful Lead Design Engineer at BIMTEK, working on technical, highly skilled projects with exceptional industry experience.Read more below to learn about Lynton's journey – and how you can do the same.
"After completing a two-year BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering in 2014, I secured two apprenticeship offers from leading consultancies in Bath.I continued my higher education with sponsorship from a leading company. I completed a two-year Level 4 HNC in Building Services Engineering in 2016, specialising in Electrical Engineering in my second year. From Construction Design Management (CDM) and the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) to tendering, procurement, lighting calculations and engineering mathematics, the course gave me a strong foundation in delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective designs."
"One of the main projects I worked on was redesigning part of a Bath College building into student accommodation. The aim was to make the best use of the space while creating comfortable bedrooms and shared living areas, and to ensure everything met safety and building regulations. We used 3D design software to plan different layout options before combining them into a final design. This includes things like en-suite bedrooms, shared kitchens, and accessible rooms.Alongside the layout, I also worked on the electrical side: designing lighting, fire alarms, and power systems, and thinking about how students would actually use the space daily. It was a great mix of creativity and technical problem-solving and reflected the kind of real-world projects you'd work on in the industry."
"I completed my lighting design units alongside two of my lecturers – and both were senior engineers at the company I had worked for…That made the course directly relevant to my daily work and gave me exactly the experience I needed. The lighting design modules, especially those using Dialux lighting software, were valuable when I moved on to large-scale stadium and arena projects. The skills I learned transferred straight into real-world applications."
"Working while studying is definitely a challenge for any aspiring student, but it gives you the real-world experience you need to push your career forward. If I could offer any advice to anyone considering HNC studies, it would be to go for it!The qualification opens doors, builds your confidence, and gives you practical skills that genuinely make a difference."
"I never went down the Bachelor's route because I was more passionate about learning through the trade and gaining real experience on site. That felt like the right path for me. Now, more than ten years after starting my journey, I'm really grateful I made that choice. It pushed my learning forward faster than I imagined.I started as a Trainee Technician in the print room. I was folding drawings while studying to become an Electrical Engineer – working my way up.Eventually, I took the step of starting my own limited company as a BIM Coordinator and worked for several leading consultants and contractors.Today, I'm Digital Lead for BIMTek Limited and a Junior Lead Design Engineer, working on water recycling centres and offering my expertise to much-needed infrastructure.Having experience across multiple disciplines has massively improved my coordination skills and given me a much broader understanding of the industry."
