1) What inspired you to study Law at Oxford after completing your criminology course at Bath College?

I have had my sights on law since Year 12, but I still had hesitations about committing to it long-term and whether a legal career was the right fit.

The Criminology and Law course confirmed that decision in a constructive way. It gave me insight into the human aspects of the legal system — not just what the law is, but how it affects people and communities — which strengthened my motivation to pursue Law at Oxford.

2) How did the criminology course at Bath College prepare you for university-level study?

It prepared me less by adding more content and more by sharpening how I explained my interests and engaged with ideas.

Studying criminology alongside law helped me connect legal rules to bigger questions: why we punish, what justice is for, and how the criminal justice system works in real life.

That meant I approached applications and interviews with a clearer sense of purpose.

It also gave me a stronger platform for discussion at university. Thinking about deterrence, rehabilitation, and the wider impact of legal decision-making helped me contribute nuanced points and consider different perspectives in seminars and tutorials.

3) Can you share an example of a practical activity during your course that really stood out?

Applying legal and criminological theory to real-world scenarios stood out most.

Working through case-based discussions and justice system dilemmas made the subject feel immediate. You’re not just learning definitions — you’re thinking about how decisions are made, what consequences follow, and which outcomes are fair.

It pushed me to consider multiple angles: legal principles, social context, and impact on victims and communities.

That blend of theory and application made the course feel relevant and helped me develop confidence in speaking analytically about the criminal justice system.

4) How important were opportunities to engage with universities and professionals while you were studying?

They were helpful because they gave a clearer sense of what university study and legal careers involve.

Talks, Q&As, and hearing from professionals made the subject feel more real and helped me understand different pathways.

It wasn’t the only factor, but it added useful context alongside the academic side of the course.

5) What role did research and critical thinking play in your transition to higher education?

They mattered, but the biggest value of Bath College was helping me consolidate what I’d already built at A level and maintain academic momentum.

I already had a strong base in reading, structuring arguments, and working at pace.

Bath College kept me in a focused academic routine, helped me stay engaged with law- and justice-related content, and maintain consistency while preparing for the next step.

That steady momentum was especially important going into higher education — particularly somewhere as intense as Oxford.

While my critical thinking wasn’t created that year, it was sharpened and sustained by staying academically active and confident.

6) Did the real-life work experience elements of the course influence your career aspirations?

Yes — they made my ambitions more realistic and meaningful.

They showed me how complex the justice system is in practice and how law involves real decisions affecting real people.

It helped me test what I was truly drawn to.

Seeing practical aspects made me more focused on the legal side: how arguments are built, how decisions are justified, and what fairness looks like in real situations.

It didn’t just inspire me — it refined what I wanted from studying law and the kind of impact I’d want to have.

7) What advice would you give to current Criminology students who want to progress to top universities?

Do something you genuinely enjoy. You’ll always produce your best work when you care about the subject.

Build your super-curriculars around the subject you want to study. They deepen your understanding and strengthen your application.

Don’t let your starting point or route limit what you think is possible.

I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted after A levels, which is why I took a gap year and split my time between Bath College and work.

Progress isn’t about having the perfect timeline — it’s about what you do with the time you have.

If you keep showing up, invest in your learning, and push yourself to improve, you can put yourself in contention for places you may not have thought were within reach.
