What is Access to Higher Education (HE)?
Access to Higher Education is recognised by most universities across the UK and awarded by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education. It helps you progress to university without A levels. This is an alternative route into higher education if you have been out of learning for a while. And this can help you change careers or secure a promotion.
Who is it for?
It's never too late to go to university. If you're over 19 years old, and you:
· Don't have A Levels
· May have been away from education for a while – possibly decades
· Don't feel confident with academic skills
· Want to retrain, get a pay rise, or start a new career
This course is for you. There is no "ideal" applicant. You don't need to be able to write perfect essays or fit in with youngsters. You don't have to give up your job or family care responsibilities to make this qualification work. Anybody who wants to feel confident and capable for university within a year is welcome. Higher education doesn't need to be out of reach. If you missed out on a degree earlier in life, this is your chance to hit the reset button and take control.
What does an Access to HE Diploma involve?
An Access to HE Diploma is a level 3 qualification, similar to A Levels. You will study 60 credits, split into two sections:
· 45 credits in your chosen subject area
· 15 credits in study skills to prepare for university
For the 15 credits, think essay writing, critical thinking, referencing, independent learning – all key to success at university. The Access to HE Diploma is your ticket from uncertainty to university-ready confidence and academic skills.
What subjects can you study, and how can you progress?
Bath College offers three pathways for you to study:
· Social Sciences (Psychology and Sociology)
· Education
· Health – Nursing and Midwifery
And each pathway aligns with common university degrees. The University of Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford, Bath, and UCL have previously accepted Access students. These degrees open the door to careers in:

How long does it take?
The qualification is your flexible fast-track to university. You don't have to sacrifice work and income, quality time with the family, or care responsibilities. The Access to HE Diploma puts you in control with two choices:
· Full-time in one academic year
· Part-time over two or more
