We’re incredibly proud of our student alumni, Ruby, who has successfully completed her T-Level in Business at Bath College and will be taking the next exciting step in her journey this September, joining Bath Spa University to study Business and Management BA (Hons).
Over the past two years, Ruby has made the most of every opportunity. She’s:
• Spoken at the Bath BID Business Breakfast, sharing her insights with local business leaders.
• Gained valuable industry experience through placements with Horstman UK, Not Impossible, and right here at Bath College.
• Developed essential professional skills in public speaking, networking, and project management.
We recently sat down with Ruby to reflect on her T-Level experience, her growth, and what she’s most looking forward to at university. Her story is a fantastic example of how T-Levels can open doors and build confidence for the future.
What inspired you to choose a T-Level at Bath College?
I decided to do a T-Level extremely last minute. I was originally enrolled to do A-Levels at my secondary school as this was highly encouraged, but following the independence that the summer break gave me, I realised I wanted to try a different approach to education, I wanted more independence and practical experience, so I looked at enrolling late into Bath College. I knew I excelled at and enjoyed Business Studies and wanted to pursue it at University, so I researched related courses and found T-Level Management and Administration, which would not only give me the qualifications required to get into University that I wanted from A-Levels, but also the experience and connections that you gain from an apprenticeship - it was the best of both worlds.
How did a T-Level prepare you for your next steps in higher education?
My T-Level significantly increased my chances of getting into university and made me more employable. Before college I didn’t have much to include on my personal statement or CV, but this course changed that. I gained over 315 hours of work experience in project management at a leading defence engineering company, spoke on a panel at a local business improvement event, built valuable industry connections and earned a qualification equivalent to 3 A-Levels. What once felt like a lack of experience has now turned into the challenge of fitting it all on my personal statement.
What were some of the most valuable skills or lessons you learned during the course?
The most valuable lesson I learnt is understanding the importance of confidence and drive in the professional world. I used to think success relied solely on intelligence and grades, but this course and my industry placement taught me that experience and networking are just as crucial.
Can you share a memorable project or experience from your T-Level studies?
The Occupational Specialism project was one I got extremely stuck into. It provides a great balance between guidance and freedom, allowing you to get creative rather than just answering exam questions. I enjoyed creating presentations, hosting mock meetings and leading coaching sessions. Being assessed on practical skills as well as knowledge made it more meaningful and looking back on all my completed work gave me a real sense of achievement.
How did the industry placement component of the T-Level impact your learning and career goals?
At 16-19, it is so hard to answer the question: “What do you want to do when you grow up?” The 315-hour industry placement gave me the chance to work in a real professional environment and explore different career paths. By 18, I already have experience in project management, account management, HR, marketing and quality management and I have built meaningful industry connections. This experience helped me clarify what I want from my future career, an insight that many people only discover after graduating university.
