The Uniformed Protective Services course at Bath College helps students across Bath and beyond prepare for careers in policing, the military, fire and rescue, and essential frontline public services.
One of our successful alumni is Jonny Bevan, a former Detective Constable in the Child Protection Team at Avon and Somerset Police and a proud alumnus of the University of the People.
Today, he is a police coach, offering professional advice and encouraging frontline heroes to develop strong leadership skills. Drawing on his policing experience, Jonny helps clients make confident decisions, perform under pressure, and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
I knew I wanted a career in the police and thought that initially joining the military police would give me strong experience.
I had initially started a Health and Social Care course, but quickly realised it was not for me. I then heard about the Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services course at Bath College and thought it would help me build the foundations for a career in the police.
I have many fond memories from the course, but the leadership skills resonated with me the most. It was the first time I could take charge, lead groups, and grow my confidence.
I eventually joined the police and, in 2019, whilst still serving as a Police Officer, I retrained as a life coach. To raise awareness, I started delivering keynote talks. This also helped me overcome a lifelong fear of public speaking—something I felt had always held me back.
It became a productive way to manage fear and use it as a tool to move forward rather than something to avoid.
It was a real honour to come back and speak to students because I was on the very first Public Services course in Bath.
I love seeing the enthusiasm of young people. It filled me with excitement to see them at the start of their journey, and I valued the opportunity to pass on the knowledge I’ve gained—things I wish I had known at the very beginning.
We now live in an overstimulated society, with constant pressure to always be available.
There is often an expectation to respond immediately to every message and request, which can lead to increased anxiety and burnout.
Now more than ever, young people need to develop the skills to lean into fear and set clear boundaries—both of which lead to greater confidence.
It’s a great course, and you get out what you put in.
Stay focused and understand why you are doing it—because your “why” is your fuel.
The most rewarding part is who I have become along the way. Experiences come and go, but who you are stays with you forever.
Just be you.
If you want a career on the frontline—helping to keep communities safe with purpose and teamwork—this course is where it starts.
Apply now to the Uniformed Protective Services Level 3 course and secure your place.
