What is the core philosophy behind the Complementary Therapies course at Bath College?

Our philosophy is rooted in holistic healing. We aim toempower students with the knowledge and practical skills to treat the wholeperson—mind, body, and spirit. By the end of the course, students areconfident, competent, and qualified to work as professional practitioners.

What types of therapies are taught (e.g., massage,reflexology, aromatherapy)?

We teach full body massage, reflexology, and aromatherapy asour core therapies. Students learn advanced massage techniques, pressure pointtherapy for hands and feet, and how to blend essential oils safely andeffectively. We also offer short CPD-certified courses in areas like hot stonemassage, Hopi ear candling, pregnancy massage, cancer touch therapy, facials,and bamboo massage.

How is the course structured across the academic year?

The course is divided into four main units, each designed to build long-term skills. Students complete two externally set exams and one internal theory exam. Practical assessments are carried out with the support of local spa managers, ensuring real-world standards.

What qualifications or certifications do students earn upon completion?

Students graduate with a Level 3 Diploma in Complementary Therapies. They also receive certification in aromatherapy cosmetic making and CPD certificates from any additional short courses they complete.

What practical skills do students gain during the course?

Our students leave with a wide range of massage techniques,safe body mechanics, and posture awareness. They can confidently blendaromatherapy oils and perform full reflexology treatments. All students areeligible for practitioner insurance upon completion.

How do you balance theory with hands-on practice?

Each lesson begins with theory to build foundational knowledge, followed by practical sessions to apply what they've learned. We also host internal and external masterclasses to deepen their skills.

Are there any guest lecturers or industry professionals involved in teaching?

Yes, we regularly invite professionals from top spas like The Gainsborough, Lucknam Park, and The Newt. ESPA also provides holistic wellbeing sessions. These experts showcase advanced techniques and innovative treatments, giving students invaluable exposure.

What kind of facilities and equipment do students have access to?

Our salon facilities are first-class. We have adjustable electric and hydraulic couches, dimmed lighting, and air conditioning. Students also access a small spa with an infrared sauna, dry floatation bed, steam room, and rainforest shower. It's a truly immersive environment.

Can you tell us about the partnership with Glastonbury Festival and Silverstone? How did those opportunities come about?

Thanks to our strong relationships with local spas and our high standards, we were approached by Homewood Spa to provide treatments at high-end glamping experiences at Glastonbury and Silverstone. It was an incredible opportunity for our students.

What roles did students play at these events, and what kind of treatments did they offer?

Students offered massage, facials, and body treatments to a range of high-profile clients including musicians, film stars, influencers, and business professionals. It was a real taste of working in elite wellness environments.

How do these experiences prepare students for working in the wellness industry?

They provide real-life industry experience and help students understand the expectations and standards required. These placements often lead to early employment and build confidence in professional settings.

Are there other notable placements or collaborations students can expect?

Absolutely. We visit around ten spas throughout the year to explore different approaches and styles. Students also take part in the Bath Half Marathon, providing cool-down massages to over 120 runners. We host a massage competition judged by industry professionals, with prizes like spa treatments and luxury sessions.

What kinds of careers do graduates typically pursue?

Our graduates go on to become spa therapists, managers, trainers, aromatherapy suppliers, and even business owners. Many also move into teaching and training roles within the field.

Are there any standout alumni who’ve gone on to do exciting things in the field?

Yes! Emily Desborough progressed from beauty therapy to complementary therapy and was promoted to spa manager at Center Parcs. Michelle Broom founded her own company, Stress Angels, offering seated chair massage in office environments.

How does the course support students in building their own therapy business or going freelance?

We include a mandatory business unit where students explorevarious career paths and create a business plan tailored to their therapypractice. It’s a vital part of preparing them for freelance work orentrepreneurship.

Are there any extracurricular activities or wellness events students get involved in?

Students can access the college gym, sports activities, and wellness classes. The Student Union is also setting up clubs that connect therapy to personal wellbeing. Many students use their training to support their own health and balance.
