Entry Requirements

You don't need an English qualification to start this course helps you get your first qualification.

But you will need to attend an interview.

This will help our tutors decide if the course is right for you and the most appropriate level for you to start your English journey on.

Again, please remember that the course will only go ahead if we receive enough applications.

The college will invite you to an interview via email.

During the interview and assessment, you must mention which college campus you wish to study at.

What topics are covered?

Each module covers the basic English skills to build your knowledge and pass the English Functional exam:

  • Reading understanding and analysing texts.
  • Writing producing clear, accurate, and purposeful written communication
  • Speaking, Listening, and Communicating effectively contributing to discussions and presentations.
  • Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar
How will I be taught and assessed?

You can learn in person at the:

  • City Centre Campus in Bath
  • Somer Valley Campus in Radstock
  • Twerton Learning Hub in Twerton, Bath

Remote classes

You must attend these in real time, rather than self-studying at your own pace.

You must have a good understanding of English to attend online classes.

If you are new to English Functional skills, you will learn best in person, and we may decide that the remote offering is not an option for you.

This way, you get extra support from our expert tutors is by attending in person.

English Functional Skills exams run several times throughout the year, so you can choose to sit your exam when you're ready.

What can I do next?

After you complete the course (at Level 2), you will earn the equivalent of a GCSE grade 4 in English.

Most jobs and qualifications require a grade 4 in English. This means you open the door to new work or study opportunities if you pass.

This qualification is aimed at those who have struggled with English in the past but now wish to work towards a formal qualification either for work or personal reasons.
