The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Ladies Hairdressing is a Technical Certificate qualification aimed at learners aged 16-19 and 19+ learners who require a full-time Level 2 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed junior hairdresser/hairstylist.

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior hairdresser/hairstylist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Blow-dry and style hair
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Cut ladies hair
  • Health, safety and hygiene
  • Set and dress hair
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Style hair with electrical equipment

Learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health, safety and legislation requirements necessary, and develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, provide a range of basic cutting, colouring and lightening services.

This course will involve 1 evening session a week as part of the main programme.

  • Progression from L1 Hair (with 1 GCSE grade 4 in Math or English)
  • New applicants must have either Maths or English at grade 4 and 3 other GCSE's at grade 3 or above (Maths, English, Science + 1 other)

What topics are covered?
How will I be taught and assessed?

These courses will be taught through a combination of classroom theory sessions and practical sessions in our dedicated public facing Academy salon. Your work will be internally and externally assessed. You will complete graded end of unit practical assessments and a final graded practical synoptic alongside 2 written externally set theory papers.


This qualification will allow you to demonstrate the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed in producing desserts, puddings, biscuits, bread and other patisserie and confectionery items.

What can I do next?

You could progress onto level 3 hairdressing or an apprenticeship or move directly into employment within a salon.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need to purchase some materials and kit and a uniform at the start of your course. There may be some additional costs to cover course trips, these will be discussed when you start your year of study.

What is the aim of the course?

The core content of this course focuses on the knowledge and understanding of the hairdressing sector, supporting you to gain the transferable and core skills you will require within the hair industry. You will cover a range of topics including, blow-dry and style hair, colour and lighten hair, cut ladies hair, health, safety and hygiene, set and dress hair, shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp, style hair with electrical equipment. The programme develops skills and reflects working in hair salons, you will complete minimum of 60 hours work experience within the industry.
