The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing is a technical level qualification aimed at 16+ on completion of Level 2 and 19+ learners who have previously achieved the basic operative level. It is designed for learners who wish to pursue a career as an employed advanced stylist/employer and/or self-employed hairdresser/stylist. This course leads on from the level 2 hairdressing diploma to maximise and develop more advanced skills in hairdressing.

This course will involve 1 evening session a week as part of the main programme.

Level 2 in hairdressing

What topics are covered?

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a senior hairdresser/stylist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Hairdressing consultation
  • Hair cutting services
  • Hair colouring services
  • Setting and dressing services
  • Blow-drying and finishing services
  • + 1 optional unit to be chosen

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, provide a range of cutting and colouring services, and set, dress and finish the hair.

How will I be taught and assessed?

These courses will be taught through a combination of classroom theory sessions and practical sessions in our dedicated public facing Academy salon. Your work will be internally and externally assessed. You will complete graded end of unit practical assessments and a final graded practical synoptic alongside 2 written externally set theory papers.

What can I do next?

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing qualifications in related courses, Barbering, Beauty and Media Make-up.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need to purchase some materials and kit and a uniform at the start of your course. There may be some additional costs to cover course trips, these will be discussed when you start your year of study.

What is the aim of the course?

The core content of this course focuses on the knowledge and understanding of the hairdressing sector, supporting you to gain the transferable and core skills you will require within the hair industry. You will cover a range of topics including hair cutting services, hair colouring, setting and dressing services, blow-drying and finishing services. The programme develops skills and reflects working in hair salons, you will complete minimum of 60 hours work experience within the industry.
