If you would like to start a career in floristry or have a keen interest for this area, this intensive course is ideal for you. New topics will be discussed and fresh designs made each week.

This qualification will enable students to recognise the elements and principles of design such as colour or balance and apply them to all aspects of floral design. You will learn to identify and assess the quality of different types of cut flowers, foliage and berried materials, and look at availability and conditioning prior to use in floral designs. Another aspect of the course will focus on the elaboration of hand tied floristry designs including presentation and various types of gift packaging. There is an additional unit on wedding designs where you will demonstrate skills in the design and construction of simple commercial wedding designs, including wiring and gluing techniques, packaging, evaluation and costing.

Entry Requirements

This course is aimed at adults aged 18 and 19+. Each candidate will be contacted for an interview.

For the best chance of success, you will need to start your studies with a good standard of literacy and numeracy (GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English at Grades D/3 or above).

What topics are covered?

This course has 4 units and will cover the following areas:

  • Introduction to Art and Design for florists
  • Identify, check and monitor the quality of incoming cut materials
  • Plan, prepare and construct tied floristry designs
  • Plan, prepare and construct wedding designs with flower materials

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will receive tuition from a specialist tutor. Lessons will involve a mix of theory and practice in the workshop. You will be assessed through online exams, practical assessments and written assignments.

What can I do next?

Upon successful completion of this course, you can move into employment or progress to further study. Jobs you can apply for include Assistant Florist, Wedding Flower Arranger or Flower Shop Supervisor/Manager.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need to bring notebooks, pens, and a camera or mobile phone for taking pictures of your work. Occasionally, you will be asked to bring in other items to use (i.e. containers, garden foliage etc.).


The College will supply flowers, sundries and mechanics. Should you wish to take your design home, a charge will be made (to be advised on a weekly basis).

What else do I need to know?

To avoid disappointment, please make sure you apply for your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course.

The College has a canteen, but you may bring your own food and drink if you wish.

What is the aim of the course?

You will gain a City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Floristry.
