This Level 3 qualification follows on from our Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Level 2 course. It is designed for those individuals who already have experience as a school support worker and are looking to upskill and be more confident in their delivery.

In this programme, you will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to support teaching and learning in the classroom. You will learn how to deliver to small groups and assess. Aspects of SEND will be taught so you can deal with different eventualities in the classroom. The lessons will also cover classroom management skills, child development, national curriculum and early years framework.

This course is aimed at those individuals who already work in a school, or volunteer for two days a week. You will be expected to attend College one day a week to obtain the theory element of the programme, which will include written assignments. In addition, your practice will be observed and assessed in your workplace.

Entry Requirements

This course is aimed at adults aged 18 and 19+. Each applicant will be contacted for an interview.

You will need to already work in a school or find a placement for at least two days per week in a role supporting children and young people's learning and obtain a DBS check. You will also be expected to have GCSEs in English and Maths at grades 4/C or above and some basic IT capability at Level 1. Completing the Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Level 2 qualification is a good starting point.

What topics are covered?

This course has 11 mandatory units and will cover some of the following areas:

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Supporting learning activities
  • Supporting assessement for learning
  • Promoting children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Engaging in personal development in health, social care settings with children and young people
  • Supporting children and young people's health and safety
  • How to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught by a specialist tutor via face-to-face lessons in the classroom. This qualification is written-based but your learning will be enhanced through group activities including presentations, discussions and project work.

You will be expected to complete a number of assignments at the required standard, and receive workplace observations where you will be given supportive feedback to enhance your learning further. Units are assessed via a variety of methods: presentations, discussions, journals and observations in the setting. There are no exams for this qualification.

What can I do next?

Upon successful completion of the course, you can find employment as a Teaching Assistant or move into a more specialised role in administration, learning support or management. You can also progress to a Higher Level Teaching Assistant course (please note this programme is predominantly taught via Distance Learning and currently not offered by the College).
