You might be a Teaching Assistant, Social Worker, Health Care Assistant, Community Volunteer, or Charity Worker.

In this course, you will learn about learning disabilities from a social, medical, and historical context – and the impact it can have on family members.

Entry Requirements

You must be 18 and over to take this course, and you will need to attend an interview.

Don't worry, this isn't a test. The interview is a chance to see if the course is right for you.

You need a GCSE grade of C/4 (or equivalent) in English Language.

You also need to find a work experience placement of at least one day per week in education or health and social care.

What topics are covered?

This course has 4 units and will cover the following areas:

  • The context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities
  • Communication in health and social care settings
  • Supporting individuals with multiple conditions and/or disabilities
  • Awareness of autistic spectrum conditions

How will I be taught and assessed?

Lessons take place once a week at the Somer Valley Campus in Radstock.

You will improve your knowledge of learning disabilities through work research, group activities, discussions, practical exercises, planned trips, and visits from expert guest speakers.

You will also complete written project portfolios and observed practical sessions on work placement as part of your assessments.

This is a chance to prove your skills in a practical environment, not just in writing.

What can I do next?

You can progress to our Part-time Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools, Education & Training, or Counselling qualifications.

As well as this, you could get a promotion at your current workplace with your new skill set.

What else do I need to know?

This qualification does not qualify you to work but will support you in your current job role or future job roles when supporting children, young people or adults with learning disabilities.

To avoid disappointment, please make sure you apply for your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course.

What is the aim of the course?

You will gain an NCFE Cache Level 2 Award in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities.

Fees and Funding
