Frequently Asked Questions

Entry Requirements

They must have an EHCP to join this course. Head to GOV.UK, if you want to find out more.

An EHCP helps our tutors match and hyper-personalise learning to your young person's learning difficulties and individual goals.

They do not need any academic qualifications or experience. This is a needs-led programme.

Once you apply, you and your young person will receive an invite to an informal chat.

Don't worry, there are no assessments or tests.

This is a chance to familiarise yourself with the college, the tutors, and the facilities in a supportive space.

During the day, the process will look like:

  • A meeting to understand your young person's physical and mental needs.
  • A review of the EHCP to match their needs to the programme.
  • Discussions to build a clear picture of the learner's needs and progression.
  • An optional, low-pressure visit to become familiar with the college before they join.

This programme meets learners' needs to build confidence and independence for their next step.

Because of this, there are no behavioural or personality expectations.

If this course isn't the right step for them, our tutors recommend the Introduction to Adulthood programme.

This is for learners who need a primary sensory-engagement curriculum and regulation.

What topics are covered?
  • Communication and Interaction for Adult Life
  • Functional Cognition and Learning
  • Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH)
  • Sensory & Physical Development
  • Independence & Preparation for Adulthood
How will I be taught and assessed?

The classrooms at the Somer Valley Campus in Radstock make people feel safe and inspired to learn.

Learners build skills without judgment or fear of mistakes.

SEND tutors create a practical, personalised programme to help the learner achieve personal EHCP goals and develop independence.

Assessments are always practical, rather than written, to help them realistically prepare for adult life.

They will also take part in structured group activities.

This helps them build communication and teamwork skills for potential volunteering roles or internships.

Assistive technology and different print are available to remove learning barriers.

At Bath College, tutors celebrate every personal milestone with a special event.

And you, the parent or carer, can attend ongoing progress review meetings.

We understand that you want complete reassurance over your child's progress and safety while they learn.

That's why every lesson is hyper-personalised to help learners build independence and confidence for adulthood in a supportive space.

What can I do next?

As the course helps learners with PMLD or complex needs, each progression path is different.

While it does depend on the learner's EHCP, typical routes include:

  • Specialist adult-social-care and day-service provision
  • Supported living pathways
  • Therapy-led programmes
  • Community participation

If the learner is ready, they may progress to a bespoke adult learning offer at Bath College.
