Introduction to Sculpture (23/24)

Course Overview

This course provides an opportunity to explore a broad range of sculptural concepts and processes as well as help you to build a larger visual vocabulary. You will have the opportunity to undertake a series of small exploratory projects, with guidance from your lecturer. The programme will cover basic sculptural concepts, processes, themes and movements. Topics and material choices are determined via discussion with your tutor. Example processes that may be covered include constructing with card, paper, wood, wire, working with different metals, modelling and casting using mod roc, and working with 'recycled and 'found' objects. The course will also involve some drawing and personal research into artists suggested by your tutor and of your own choosing. This course is aimed at but not exclusively for those with little or no experience of the sculptural or design process. Throughout the course you will learn a range of 2-d and 3-d skills - from design to 3d construction, explore and experiment with different ideas, media and processes gain skills in making, as well as an understanding of the formal elements; line, colour, scale, shape, form, space, and texture. You need to be willing to learn new processes and challenge yourself. An A3 Ring Bound Sketchbook and a Digital camera or mobile phone will be needed for this course. Learners will be expected to take notes, make sketches, plan outcomes and document their progress fully. A small amount of Learner self study may be required outside of timetabled course hours. The aim is to gain confidence, develop your creative 'voice', and complete a series or one finished piece. Suitable for beginners and anyone wanting to explore new sculptural processes.
