Frequently Asked Questions

Entry Requirements

You need 4 GCSES at grade 3 or above, including Maths or English at grade 4.

After you apply, you will attend a presentation and interview process.

Tutors will run through a presentation on the course, the content, and the expectations at Bath College.

After this, you will attend a short interview. Don't worry, this is to test if the course is right for you.

And you don’t need to complete any practical assessments.

All that we look for is:

  • A friendly and professional personality
  • Good communication skills
  • A desire to work with the public
  • A tidy personal presentation
  • A commitment to attendance and practical learning

If you secure a spot, you will attend an introductory session at the end of June.

Here, you will meet other learners, understand the kit and uniform requirements, and receive a summer project to complete.

If this path isn't the right fit, our tutors recommend the Level 1 Hair or Level 1 Beauty course.

What topics are covered?

Each module gives you the knowledge and experience in a realistic salon setting – and covers everything a beginner needs to progress.

  • Facial skincare
  • Waxing services
  • Manicure
  • Pedicure
  • Client care and communication
  • Health and safety
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Salon reception duties
  • Product and service promotion
  • Additional underpinning theory to support all treatments
How will I be taught and assessed?

Every year, hundreds of beauty learners build salon-ready skills.

You will learn in The Academy, Bath College's realistic salon, open to the public.

This means you get to work with the public, staff, and volunteer learners, giving you work experience before you even qualify.

The Academy facilities include:

  • A fully equipped, professional beauty salon
  • Access to the latest beauty products and tools
  • A reception training area
  • Theory classrooms for anatomy and supporting knowledge

In a real salon setting, you get a taste of professional salon work without leaving the college.

Practical workshops and demonstrations, followed by supervised practice, help you build the skills salon employers want with support from our expert tutors.

You will be assessed by tutors and, sometimes, employers.

Half of your assessments will be based on your portfolio. The other half will be online theory exams.

This mixture of theory and practical assessments means you can prove your experience through skills and knowledge relevant to salon work.

All tutors have previous professional salon experience.

This means all lessons and training work towards in-demand skills for the beauty industry.
