Course Overview

This is a 10-week course that is designed for those interested in making their own patterns for clothing. Learners must have completed at least 2 levels of previous Creative Pattern cutting or have experiences in pattern cutting. You will draft your own patterns using the blocks made in previous terms. It will help you to refine your garment construction skills taking them to the next level. From these blocks you will learn how to manipulate them to creative styles of your chosen design.

What topics are covered?

You will learn how to take accurate measurements for the lower part of your body to create an industrial standard block to fit yourself. With this block you will learn how to manipulate it to draft various skirt styles, from these drafts you will make a pattern of your chosen design, be taught how to sew a Toile and fit it to your body.

For all those interested in making your own clothing patterns
For the first few weeks you will be shown how to draft your block (first garment) and how to construct these into a pattern and then into a toile. You will be shown step by step how this toile is constructed.
For your first template the calico is provided. You will be required to supply the fabric of your choice.
Please bring a sewing tool kit comprising the following:- Paper scissors; Fabric scissors; 4H pencil; Rubber; White & black thread; Hand sewing needle; Pencil sharpener; Metric Ruler; Metric tape measure; Calculator. In order to fit your block (first draft of garment) please wear suitable clothing such as leggings and a vest top.
Pattern cutting combines creative & technical skills so an understanding of basic maths is essential. Basic hand sewing & sewing machine skills are required. All measurements are in Metric; Measuring & fitting will be done in pairs; Calico and paper are provided.
