Course Overview

This course is for anyone who wants to work in stonemasonry, conservation, restoration or construction. It will provide you with hands-on experience, broad knowledge and skills training, and enable you to progress and become qualified within the stonemasonry industry. You will be learning to prepare for setting out and producing architectural stone work, and study a number of units including health, safety and welfare in construction and associated businesses, understanding technical information, quantities and communication with others.

Success Story

Four of our stonemasonry students were presented with the Bath College award for volunteering group of the year after they worked hard to create a stone bench for Bath City Farm, the result of winning an initial selection competition. There are no academic entry requirements. However we are looking for students who are enthusiastic, driven, good with deadlines and show a true passion for a physically demanding but very rewarding course and future career. Depending on your prior grades, experience, and aptitude, you may be able to enter the programme at level 2 or level 3.
There are no additional costs for this course.
You will gain new skills and a comprehensive knowledge of the trade, along with valuable work experience, all of which will prepare you for a rewarding career in stonemasonry. On successfully completion the course you will achieve a nationally recognised qualification at the appropriate level.
You will receive tuition through the year with an assessed piece at the end. The practical work is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on the quality of the finished piece. Work experience is gained with the College, working on site at Woodchester Mansion, where we cover a wide variety of conservation and restoration projects. We believe your College experience should be more than just a qualification - there are regular events throughout the year hosted by our student union and participation team. You will complete 60 hours of work experience in the Stonemasonry industry which will allow for you to gain vital experience on the course. We have an hour a week for our Personal Development Framework, this will be an opportunity for you to choose from a large selection of workshops and classes in a subject/topic of your choice.
You can progress through the programme into levels 2 and 3 - after which you will be well equipped to begin working in the sector. The lecturers have very close links with industry and are often able to help students find work in the field of Stonemasonry.
