Carpentry & Joinery Level 1 Diploma
This part-time Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Diploma course is for you if you are need a qualification in construction, have strong motivation and the ability to work under pressure. This one year, one day a week programme is run in a realistic training environment, where learners can demonstrate their individual strengths through the fabrication of a series of woodworking joints, learning the essential skills necessary to succeed in a competitive workplace. The course is based at our Construction Centre at Somer Valley Campus, Radstock.
What topics are covered?
- Principles of building construction.
- Information and communication.
- Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools.
- Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools.
- Produce woodworking joints.
- Health, safety and welfare in construction.
Who is the course aimed at?
This course is aimed at mature students who are looking for a condensed version of the Level 1 Carpentry course. It runs for one day a week at the Construction Centre, Somer Valley Campus and requires considerable commitment and a high level of motivation from applicants.
What are the entry requirements?
Applications will be assessed on an individual basis by the course tutor to ensure suitability for the course. Entry to the course will be by interview and will depend on previous experience, commitment and the academic ability required for a level of self-study required on the course. Minimum grades C/4 in Maths and English.

You will gain a Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery.

How will I learn?
There will be practical workshop sessions and classroom theory sessions.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through workshop-based practical assessments and multiple choice end-of-unit knowledge tests.
What can I do after this course?
On completion of this course, you can progress onto either the Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry or the Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery.
Are there any additional costs?
You will need to purchase Safety boots and a basic stationery kit.

Where is this course?
Where will I need to go on my first day?On your first day, please report to the Reception in the Cam Building at Somer Valley Campus.
What do I need to bring?
Safety boots, tape measure and stationary kit for classroom based sessions.
What else do I need to know?To avoid disappointment, please make sure you apply for your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course. If a course is cancelled, you will be informed and your course fees refunded in full.
