Fine Metal

Fine Metal describes the design and making of small-scale artefacts using the unique visual and physical properties of a range of metals such as copper, pewter, steel and silver; the fineness is in the scale of working and the precise nature of skills applied. Ideas can include the development of sculptural works or more practical applications such as cutlery and containers. Many of the materials, techniques and approaches are also relevant and transferable to a jewellery context. Other complementary materials may also be considered such as woods, stones and resins.

Tutor was very knowledgeable and helpful and gave me a lot of confidence for using my new found skill set. Personally would love to see some starter courses focussing on a particular area – claw setting, polishing etc.

The course is fun & rewarding with good support and encouragement from the instructor. Some of the equipment is becoming a bit long i the tooth and let us down this term, but efforts were made to overcome this.

I have attended these sessions for several years and have received gratefully the advice and guidance of the tutor, Melanie Sproat. I will, I hope, continue to have enjoyable Tuesday evenings for many years to come.

This is an interesting class which offers the chance to learn about a great variety of metalworking techniques. Melanie is a very patient and encouraging teacher, happy to support the students in whatever project they choose to undertake. She has an amazing understanding of the materials in use and is able to salvage even the most wayward of creations!

The support and encouragement given by Mrs Sproat is first class and the range of different techniques available is wide enough to allow free range to the imagination. Excellent instruction. I’ll be back.
