Introduction to Construction Level 1
This is a 1-year course for 14-19 year olds wishing to gain some practical experience and understanding of the painting and decorating and bricklaying trade areas within the construction industry.
The qualification covers a range of hand skills and practical tasks letting the learner develop the basic skills and knowledge of preparing for and applying paint systems to walls and ceilings and how to construct single brick and block walls. There is also a mandatory health, safety and welfare unit.
You will be able to develop your employability skills like CV writing and interview techniques and includes the expectation of completing work experience within the construction industry.
During this year you will be expected to continue with maths and English courses depending upon your current grades.
What topics are covered?
This course will cover 3 trade subjects over 5 units. Health, safety and welfare in construction, Painting and decorating – we will cover preparation of surfaces and application of paint and bricklaying – we will cover construction of single brick and block walls and cavity walls.
Who is the course aimed at?
These qualifications are suitable for 14-19 year olds, or for individuals of any age wanting an introduction to the variety of construction trades, to gain skills in those areas and perhaps to decide which trade is the right one to pursue a career in. No previous knowledge or experience is required.
What are the entry requirements?
A willingness to learn and an interview with the course leader.
What qualifications will I gain?
You will gain an award in construction skills at level 1.

How will I learn?
You will spend the majority of the time in our purpose built workshops watching and being shown how to improve your skills, learning and improving on the skills and knowledge needed to pass the assessments.
How will I be assessed?
At the end of each unit you will complete a practical assessment and answer questions based on your learning.
What can I do after this course?
The qualification covers a range of hand skills and practical tasks letting the learner develop the basic skills and knowledge for them to progress onto either bricklaying or Painting and decorating at level 1 or depending upon your Maths and English results level 2. You could also look for an apprenticeship in either trade area.
