Introduction to Philosophy
An introduction to Western Philosophy from Ancient Greece to the present day, this beginners course examines some of the most important issues in thinking about and understanding our world and includes profiles of some of the great philosophers.
What topics are covered?
How we know things; what is real; right and wrong; personal identity; political and religious thinking; logic and reasoning; classical philosophy: Socrates and Plato / Descartes: ‘I think, therefore I am’; twentieth-century philosophy: Wittgenstein and Foucault; philosophy today.
What are the entry requirements?
No previous knowledge is required to enrol on the Introduction to Philosophy course.
How will I learn?
A mixture of discussion, group activity, lecture, question and answer and practical exercises.

Where will I need to go on my first day?On your first day, please report to the Reception in the Roper Building at City Centre Campus.
What do I need to bring?
Notepad and pen, all other materials will be provided.
What else do I need to know?To avoid disappointment, please make sure you enrol on your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course. If a course is cancelled, you will be informed and your course fees refunded in full.
