Painting – Holiday Workshop
This Painting course provides intensive tuition in our fully-equipped painting studio for you to discover and develop your painting skills with acrylics, watercolours and oils. You will have the opportunity to try different approaches and to explore a number of traditional and experimental techniques. You will also look at the work of other artists to gain inspiration and understanding.
What topics are covered?
Through practical art making, and discussing images of other artists’ work, you will be introduced to the ways that the Elements and Principles of Design can be used to compose and develop a painting. There will be practical demonstrations of painting techniques including colour mixing, and the uses of appropriate solvents and additive media. There will also be individual tuition to help you develop your observational and technical skills as your paintings evolve. We will make paintings from both still life and photographs, and you will have the opportunity to develop an individual project of your own, to complete the course.
Who is the course aimed at?
Students of all levels of ability are welcome.
Who will be my tutor?
Melissa Wraxall is a Bath-based artist, who has exhibited in Vancouver, Sydney, London, and the South West, and has work in private collections in Canada, Australia and the UK. She has a Master of Fine Art from Bath Spa University, and a Bachelor of Art Education from the City Art Institute in Sydney. She has curated three exhibitions in Bath, and has extensive teaching experience including freelance lecturing at the National Gallery in London.
Melissa’s intensely coloured expressionist abstractions, have developed gradually out of the painterly, gestural, figurative paintings and drawings of her Master of Fine Art degree. She balances eye-popping contrasts, with subtle variations of hue and texture, and uses unconventional tools and techniques, alongside brushes and palette knives. Melissa’s titles are arrived at as the work develops, but these are not intended to limit interpretation. Her approach, based on a solid foundation of observational skill, embraces intuition, chance and experimentation.
