Sewing Skills – Part 1
The Sewing Skills for Beginners course is split into two separate parts. During this practical course you will learn basic sewing machine skills and techniques for clothing and textile projects.
Part 1 (September or January): Sewing Skills part 1 is intended to give confidence in using a sewing machine and a set of skills to equip you to experiment at home and transition to further courses such as creative fashion and Sewing Skills part 2. You will complete a series of technical samples of seams, zips, buttonholes and frills; experiment with textile surface pattern with free machine embroidery, appliqué and reverse appliqué. These skills will then be put to use to create a cushion.
Part 2 (April): Sewing Skills Part 2 will utilise skills previously learnt in Part 1 and build upon them. Make your first garment with technical assistance and guidance. You will be guided through the use of a domestic sewing pattern of your choice with advice in pattern and fabric choice as well as items needed to finish your project. Along with technical demonstrations and assistance with pattern instructions and necessary pattern alterations to aid garment completion. We recommend that you complete Part 1 prior to attending Part 2.
