Sewing Skills – Part 1

The Sewing Skills for Beginners course is split into two separate parts. During this practical course you will learn basic sewing machine skills and techniques for clothing and textile projects.

Part 1 (September or January): Sewing Skills part 1 is intended to give confidence in using a sewing machine and a set of skills to equip you to experiment at home and transition to further courses such as creative fashion and Sewing Skills part 2. You will complete a series of technical samples of seams, zips, buttonholes and frills; experiment with textile surface pattern with free machine embroidery, appliqué and reverse appliqué. These skills will then be put to use to create a cushion.

Part 2 (April): Sewing Skills Part 2 will utilise skills previously learnt in Part 1 and build upon them. Make your first garment with technical assistance and guidance. You will be guided through the use of a domestic sewing pattern of your choice with advice in pattern and fabric choice as well as items needed to finish your project. Along with technical demonstrations and assistance with pattern instructions and necessary pattern alterations to aid garment completion. We recommend that you complete Part 1 prior to attending Part 2.

I had no clue I would be able to do what (I hope) I am now! Next week I’ll be starting my own dress on my own, thanks to the knowledge we’ve acquired here!

A very good course with a good base to begin with sewing. It covered everything needed to make a cushion. Good teacher, and it gave me confidence to use my machine at home to its full capability.

Debby is a great teacher. I had the chance to learn the very basics of sewing and I’ve been followed by her through each step. I will definitely do the second part. I’m very happy about the course and Debby overall.
(I would just suggest to do more lessons split in shorter hours.)

Our tutor Belinda was enthusiastic and patient with a good sense of humour. We got straight into it and I found the course very helpful to cover the basics and all the ‘essentials’ as it promises. Belinda created a relaxed and informal yet hard working environment. It was a pleasure to be her student for the term.

Loved this course, meeting the other students, and found the instructor Belinda really lovely and personable. My only complaint is the lack of a sensible follow-on course (a complaint expressed by my fellow students as well).
