Step-Up Somer Valley Campus
Step-Up is a bridging programme that will help learners get from ‘A’ to ‘B’. It is designed to help young people develop confidence, independence and skills through emotional, social and educational support in order to help students progress on to employment or other programmes at different levels. Step Up can also accomodate ‘late starters’ or learners who have not yet settled on a programme from the start of the academic year.
What topics are covered?
Learners undertake a range of topics which may vary depending on the needs and interests of the class. Topics include enterprise projects, art, environmental awareness, healthy lifestyles, sports and fitness, employability skills (e.g. create a CV, mock interviews, see a careers advisor), alcohol and drug awareness, volunteering and work experience, life skills (e.g. budgeting, citizenship, cooking and using ICT). English and maths sessions are also included in learner’s study programmes, this could be either Functional Skills or GCSE depending on learner’s previous achievements and current working levels.
Who is the course aimed at?
Step Up is aimed at young people who have or are currently experiencing social, emotional, and/or mental health difficulties and are working at an academic level of around Level 1. Learners may have struggled in school or may have been unable to attend school due to their difficulties, meaning that they don’t have the grades to access wider college programmes and need support in identifying their personal strengths and areas for development.
What support will I get?
Learners are in classes of no more than 10-12 learners and will be supported by a teacher and a facilitator. We can also make arrangements for break time support and supported lunch rooms where required. Additional support will vary depending on individual requirements (e.g. Exam access arrangements, 1:1 English and maths top-up sessions, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy etc.). Students also have regular 1:1 tutorials with their primary tutor where they are given the opportunity to discuss progress and/or concerns.
What are the entry requirements?
Students should be able to demonstrate that they are working at Entry Level 2 in English and maths at a minimum, but applications will be discussed on an individual basis.

How will I learn?
Learners undertake a range of practical and classroom based activities.
What hours will I be in college?
Up to 16 hours per week.
How will I be assessed?
Learners are assessed using a variety of methods, such as practical observations in activities such as cooking or volunteering, presentations, written work, and self-reflection.
What can I do after this course?
Possible progression routes for Step Up learners could include wider college Level 1/2 programmes, a Traineeship, and Project Search.

What facilities are available?
Learners have access to facilities including an industrial-style kitchen, an art room, a gym, and a sports hall. Through our relationships with external organisations (e.g. Bath Canal and River Trust, Bath Rugby) learners also access external facilities throughout the year.

Standard stationary equipment, appropriate clothing/footwear for practical sessions, containers to carry cooked food home in.
