Stonemasonry Level 1

Course Overview

This course is for anyone who wants to work in stonemasonry, conservation, restoration or construction. It will provide you with hands-on experience, broad knowledge and skills training, and enable you to progress and become qualified within the stonemasonry industry. You will be learning to prepare for setting out and producing architectural stone work, and study a number of units including health, safety and welfare in construction and associated businesses, understanding technical information, quantities and communication with others. Bath College is leading the way in the stonemasonry qualifications by pioneering this course with the City and Guilds. We are holders of the prestigious Association of Colleges (AoC) Beacon Award for Practical Teaching and Practical Learning for its Living Classroom philosophy where students have undertaken skilled work under real conditions of stonemasonry and restoration work at Woodchester Mansion. Our Stonemasonry lecturer Paul Maggs has been recognised by the Worshipful Company of Masons for his skills and dedication throughout more than 30 years of experience in stonemasonry with the Master Craftsman certificate.


This course is based at our state-of-the-art Construction Skills Centre at our Somer Valley Campus.

What topics are covered?

This programme has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment. The practical hands-on training will give you the skills you need to qualify in preparation for employment.

The course includes the following units:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • The principles of stonemasonry
  • Setting out and templet making for stonemasonry components
  • Working stonemasonry components
  • Fixing stonemasonry components

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to develop their skills in this vocational area.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Must have completed secondary education with at least two GCSE subjects, preferably in maths and English.
  • Willingness and commitment to learn

How will I learn?

This course is practical-based, with regular theory lessons. We are involved from time to time with projects from local communities, councils, schools and organisations such as Bath Preservation Trust and Woodchester Mansion. This gives students a chance to work on projects within a variety of stonemasonry fields.

Our staff will aim to motivate you to acquire the technical and vocational skills which can enable you to access a professional career. You will be guided and supported by highly skilled practitioners and tutors to become a successful and confident skilled craftsman/craftswoman.

What hours will I be in college?

Two days a week

How will I be assessed?

There will be continuous practical and theoretical assessments as you work through the course.

What can I do after this course?

You can progress onto the Stonemasonry Level 2 Diploma or look for an apprenticeship in the stonemasonry industry.

Are there any additional costs?

In addition to the resources fee, you will be required to provide your own personal safety equipment and protective clothing.

What facilities are available?

Bath College’s Construction Skills Centre is a dedicated facility for construction occupations, with workshops that are well-equipped with a range of specialist tools. Well-appointed classrooms and computer facilities enhance the workshops and provide a link between the practical and the knowledge-based aspects of the course.
