Introduction to Hair Level 1
This course is ideal for school leavers interested in a career in hairdressing. The qualification provides access to understanding what is involved in the hairdressing sector.
Units can include styling women’s and men’s hair, colouring hair, hair plaiting, shampoo and conditioning.
What topics are covered?
Depending on which route you take, the following units are available. Units will be finalised at interview.
- Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
- Presenting a professional image in the salon
- Styling women’s hair
- Follow health and safety
- Plaiting and twisting hair
- Salon reception duties
Who is the course aimed at?
This course is most suited for people aged 16-18 who are just starting (out on their) vocational learning.
What are the entry requirements?
- Four GCSEs at grade G/1 or above.
- Evidence of ability to work at Level 1
- An interest in Hair and Beauty together with a caring nature, good communication skills and the ability to work with others
What qualifications will I gain?
VTCT Level 1 Award/Certificate/Diploma in an Introduction to Hair and Beauty Sector

How will I be assessed?
Continuous practical, work-based assessment will be used to teach and develop vocational skills. There will be written assignments and tests of knowledge and understanding throughout the programme.
What can I do after this course?
Progress on to
- Hairdressing NVQ Level 2
- Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 2
- Hair and Media Make Up Level 2
- Hairdressing Apprenticeship, which will provide you with the qualifications necessary to work within the hair or beauty industry.

Where will I need to go on my first day?On your first day, please report to the Reception in the Roper Building at City Centre Campus.

You will need to comply with the following policies that are issued at enrolment:
- Dress code
- Code of conduct
- Locker policy
- Scissor / knife policy
A basic stationery pack will be issued to enrolled students.
