Sculpting in Metal
Working from initial design ideas and three dimensional Maquette, you will investigate fabrication and construction. Your sculpture will be completed in metal. Help and guidance will be given in generating preliminary ideas for sculptural forms, in materials such as plaster, cardboard and timber.
What topics are covered?
Mig welding; cutting sheet metal; hand & plasma cutting; template making; Maquette making in cardboard and timber; folding and rolling sheet metal; use & operation of hand and power tools; examples of artistic practice; workshop health & safety.
How will I learn?
Group discussion of project concepts, problem solving through Marquette making, one to one tuition. Your tutor will give you a reading list and examples of artists’ work to look at to develop your own work.
Are there any additional costs?
Materials for the initial Maquettes will be provided, as will metal for practice welding. You should provide your own materials for the realization and production of your finished metal sculpture. Advice will be given as to your choice of metal materials

Where will I need to go on my first day?On your first day, please report to the Reception in the Roper Building at City Centre Campus.

What else do I need to know?
Students are encouraged to engage with sculpture outside of the course sessions; i.e. visiting exhibitions/galleries and researching into relevant artists and concepts following on from discussions with their tutor.
When you have been enrolled on your course you will receive a confirmation email containing information about where to go, campus information, parking and the Student Code of Conduct. This email will be sent to the email address provided in the online booking.You will be required to wear a photographic ID badge at all times when in College. To avoid disappointment, please make sure you enrol on your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course. If a course is cancelled, you will be informed and your course fees refunded in full. Please see Terms and Conditions of Enrolment.The course will not run on bank holidays or during half term. Please check the term dates.
