This stone carving course is aimed at carvers of all levels of experience from total beginners to the advanced. Beginners will be guided through the process of carving straight lines and curves, progressing on to leaves, flowers then a rose relief. More advanced carvers will have the opportunity to choose an item to carve, which could be an animal, a mythical beast or an architectural detail. They will then be guided through the various methods of approaching a carving in the round. Previous students have carved heads, animals, architectural items and ornament.

Types of tools and their uses; Different methods of approaching carving and suitable source materials; Limitations and adaptation of designs in stone.
Who is the course aimed at?
Anyone wishing to learn how to carve stone and develop stonemasonry banker skills.
How will I learn?
You will learn through practical demonstration and one to one tuition. Your tutor will demonstrate all stages and techniques; you will learn new techniques with every carving and be given one to one tuition throughout the course. Please feel free to take notes and photographs of all stages of carving.

You will be required to provide your own safety boots. Use of tools, stone and safety glasses are provided.

Where will I need to go on my first day?On your first day, please report to the Reception in the Roper Building at City Centre Campus.

What else do I need to know?When you have been enrolled on your course you will receive a confirmation email containing information about where to go, campus information, parking and the Student Code of Conduct. This email will be sent to the email address provided in the online booking.You will be required to wear a photographic ID badge at all times when in College. Please email a passport style photograph stating your full name and course title in the subject line to StudentID@bathcollege.ac.uk
To avoid disappointment, please make sure you enrol on your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course.
