Course Overview
What topics are covered?
10 weeks course: This course provides an encouraging atmosphere for students who want to discover and develop their drawing and painting skills and techniques. Media covered are charcoal, oil pastel, soft pastel, pencil, watercolours and acrylic and oil painting. We will look at the work of other artists from around the world and from a range of periods including modern and contemporary art. This will serve to provide inspiration and help students to develop an understanding of topics such as The Elements of Design, Perspective and Composition. Students will gain experience of drawing and painting from direct observation of Still life, as well as using photographs as source material, and they will be encouraged to develop skills in constructive feedback to support their peers and to deepen their creative practice. 5 weeks course: As in the Ten Week Course, students will have the opportunity to explore a range of drawing and painting media. For inspiration, we will look at the ways different artists have approached the same subject matter that we are using in class, and source material will include photographs as well as direct observation.
3 weeks course: Led by a practising artist, this course provides an encouraging atmosphere for students who want to discover and develop their drawing and painting skills and techniques using acrylics, watercolours, pastels and inks. We will look at the work of other artists from around the world and from a range of periods including modern and contemporary art. This will provide inspiration and help students to develop an understanding of topics such as colour, composition, and mark-making. You will see these put into practice during a demonstration by the experienced tutor. This will lead directly into painting a variety of subject matter, including a direct observation of still life, a landscape from photographs, and object details. You will receive close mentoring and encouragement from the tutor throughout the 3 weeks and leave with the ability and confidence to continue painting independently.
