Course Overview

You will be guided through the basics of drawing, colour, composition and tonal painting in a well-equipped studio environment. Tuition will be given in the exploration of different skills and techniques and you will be able to develop your understanding of processes and techniques in painting. This course will also explore the work of a number of significant artists and art movements to expand your knowledge and is suitable as a refresher course for those who have some art experience.

What topics are covered?

Led by a practising Artist, this course provides an encouraging atmosphere for students who want to discover and develop their painting skills and techniques using acrylics, watercolours and oils. We will begin with an introduction to Art History and look at the work of other Artists from around the world in a range of periods.

10 weeks course: This will serve to provide inspiration and help students to develop an understanding of topics such as Colour Theory, Perspective and Composition. You will see these put into practice during a demonstration by the experienced tutor. This will lead directly into painting a variety of subject matters, including a direct observation of still life, a landscape and a portrait from photographs. You will receive close mentoring and encouragement from the tutor throughout the 10 weeks and leave with the ability and confidence to continue painting independently.

4 weeks course: This course provides an encouraging atmosphere for students who want to discover and develop their drawing and painting skills and techniques. Media covered are charcoal, pastels, pencil, watercolours, acrylics and inks. We will look at the work of other artists from around the world and from a range of periods including modern and contemporary art. This will provide inspiration and help students to develop an understanding of topics such as colour, composition, and mark-making. Students will have the opportunity to explore a range of media, gain experience of drawing and painting from direct observation of still life, as well as using photographs as source material, and they will be encouraged to develop skills in constructive feedback to support their peers and to deepen their creative practice.

Students of all levels of ability are welcome and are fully supported in building a portfolio.
There are no assessments on this course. You will learn through practical demonstrations and one-to-one tuition.
All basic materials are provided. Your tutor will advise you if any extra materials need to be purchased.
