Life and Independent Living Skills (LILS) – City Centre Campus

Course Overview

LILS takes place at both our City Centre and our Somer Valley Campuses and learners can study on LILS for 1 to 3 years depending on progress. As its name suggests, the programme is designed to facilitate the development of learner’s independent living skills within their local communities. LILS encourages learners to explore and enhance their skills and knowledge in key elements of moving into adulthood including independent living, healthy living, relationships and communities, and employability.

What topics are covered?

Learners undertake a range of projects in a variety of topics including English, maths, volunteering, cookery, art, animal care, and sports/fitness/leisure activities. All projects are designed to develop learner’s life skills so that the learning that takes place on LILS can be applied to real-world situations.

Who is the course aimed at?

LILS is aimed at learners with a learning difficulty/disability who are working at an academic level between Entry 1 and Entry 3. The aim of LILS is to help students to become independent within their local communities, therefore when considering which campus students wish to study at we highly recommend that students consider where they live (e.g. Somer Valley LILS is aimed at students who live in Radstock, Midsomer Norton and the surrounding areas, and City Centre LILS is aimed at students who live in Bath and the surrounding areas). However, we also welcome applications from learners outside of BANES and we consider each application on a case-by-case basis and will ensure that students study at the campus which is absolutely right and appropriate for them and their individual needs.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for this programme, however students must have an EHCP and must demonstrate that they are working at Entry 1 in English and maths at a minimum.

How will I learn?

Learners undertake a range of practical, classroom, and community based activities.

What hours will I be in college?

Three or four days per week for one year, depending on campus.

How will I be assessed?

Learner’s achievement is tracked and assessed using RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement). Learners are given their own individualised learning targets which are developed based on learner’s EHCP outcomes and the Preparing for Adulthood agenda. This means that learning and assessment will be designed and tailored to suit each learner’s needs. Where appropriate, learners will be given the opportunity to work towards Functional Skills English and maths qualifications.

What can I do after this course?

Possible progression routes for LILS learners could include PET, Step Up, wider college Level 1 programmes, or Project Search.

What facilities are available?

Facilities will vary depending on which campus students study on. Our college gym and art rooms are based at our City Centre Campus, and our sensory room, de-escalation room, hoisting facilities, and animal care centre are based at our Somer Valley Campus. However, students will have the opportunity to explore and use facilities at both sites. Both campuses have an accessible kitchen and an in-house flat.

What do I need to bring?

Standard stationary equipment, appropriate clothing/footwear for practical sessions, containers to carry cooked food home in.

We highly recommend that EHCP consultations are sent to us as early as possible, particularly in cases where a longer transition is required.
