Construction Skills – Multi-trade (Bricklaying, Carpentry and Painting and Decorating) Level 1
This one-year vocational course will introduce you to the construction trades of Bricklaying, Carpentry and Painting and decorating. It can help you prepare for further learning at College, giving you the confidence and independence to further develop your skills within your chosen trade of study.
You can study for an award, a certificate, or the diploma. By studying the diploma this may allow you to progress onto a trade specific course relating to one of those trades at level 2 dependant upon the successful completion of the diploma and following the interview process.
The qualification covers a range of hand skills and practical tasks letting the learner develop the basic skills and knowledge of Carpentry, this could also include covering preparing for and applying paint systems to walls and ceilings and how to construct single brick and block walls. There is also a mandatory health, safety and welfare unit and the opportunity to gain your CSCS card.
You will be able to develop your employability skills including CV writing and interview techniques and includes the expectation of completing work experience within the construction industry.
During this year you will be expected to continue with maths and English courses depending upon your current grades.
What topics are covered?
This multi trade course covers the basic aspects of Bricklaying, Carpentry and Painting and Decorating, some of the examples that could be covered on the course are setting out and building single and double skin walls, cutting basic joints and fitting skirting, preparing walls, ceilings and woodwork before applying paint and wallpaper.
There is a mandatory Health, safety and welfare in construction unit which will be included along with gaining knowledge to achieve the labourers CSCS card.
Who is the course aimed at?
These qualifications are suitable for 14-19 year olds, or for individuals of any age wanting an introduction to the variety of construction trades, to gain skills in those areas and perhaps to decide which trade is the right one to pursue a career in. No previous knowledge or experience is required.
What are the entry requirements?
A willingness to learn and an interview with the course leader.

You will gain an award or Certificate or Diploma in Construction Skills at level 1.

How will I learn?
You will spend the majority of the time in our purpose built workshops watching and being shown how to improve your skills, learning and improving on the skills and knowledge needed to pass the assessments.
How will I be assessed?
At the end of each unit you will complete a practical assessment and answer questions based on your learning.
What can I do after this course?
The qualification covers a range of hand skills and practical tasks letting the learner develop basic skills and knowledge to maybe progress further onto either a Bricklaying, Carpentry or Painting and Decorating diploma at level 2, depending upon your Maths and English results. You could also look for an apprenticeship in either trade area.
