You will be able to experiment with a range of media which includes acrylics, watercolours and oils. You will also look at the work of other artists to gain inspiration and understanding.
What topics are covered?
10 weeks course:
This course provides an encouraging atmosphere for students who want to discover and develop their painting skills and techniques using acrylics, watercolours and oils.
We will look at the work of other artists from around the world and from a range of periods including modern and contemporary art. This will serve to provide inspiration and help students to develop an understanding of topics such as The Elements of Design, Perspective and Composition.
Students will gain experience of painting from direct observation of Still life, as well as using photographs as source material, and they will be encouraged to develop skills in constructive feedback to support their peers and to deepen their creative practice.
5 weeks course:
As in the Ten Week Course, students will have the opportunity to explore acrylics, oils and watercolours. For inspiration we will look at the ways different artists have approached the same subject matter that we are using in class, and source material will include photographs as well as direct observation.
Who is the course aimed at?
Students of all levels of ability are welcome and are fully supported in building a portfolio.
Who will be my tutor?
Melissa Wraxall is a Bath-based artist, who has exhibited in Vancouver, Sydney, London, and the South West, and has work in private collections in Canada, Australia and the UK. She has a Master of Fine Art from Bath Spa University, and a Bachelor of Art Education from the City Art Institute in Sydney. She has curated three exhibitions in Bath, and has extensive teaching experience including freelance lecturing at the National Gallery in London. Melissa’s drawings and paintings, which start from found historical photographs, are about time, transience and memory. Each photograph is a fraction of a second – a tiny piece of the jigsaw or narrative of someone’s life. While the paintings are figurative, she aims to produce abstraction in the detail, choosing when to control the medium and when to allow drips and runs. The process of drawing and painting from these images is essentially a conversation between the artist and people who are long gone, or children now grown old, trapped as ghosts in a layer of silver emulsion.
